We've had a great year: making progress on the Coast to Crest Trail and River Path Del Mar, kicking off the Coast to Crest Trail Challenge, continuing habitat restoration in Fairbanks Ranch, and so much more! All of us at the Conservancy and River Park are looking forward to an even better 2018, and we can't wait to share our plans with you -- stay tuned!

Diane Coombs, founder of the Conservancy's Watershed Explorers Program, was recently honored at the North County Philanthropy Council's 2017 30th Anniversary Volunteer Awards Luncheon at the California Center for the Arts, Escondido.
Diane is a former Executive Director of the San Dieguito River Park and hasn't stopped supporting the River Park and Conservancy.
Her knowledge and experience continue to enhance the Watershed Explorers Program. She also trains and recruits other volunteers.
We are lucky and honored to work with Diane and congratulate her on this well-deserved award!

River Park Volunteer Training Coming Next Spring
|
The San Dieguito River Park JPA will be holding a volunteer training in the spring of 2018.
The training will consist of a morning PowerPoint session at the San Diego Archaeological Center followed by an afternoon session at Sikes Adobe. The afternoon session will be split into three groups: educational docents, trail patrollers, and Dust Devils.
More details and how to register will be released in the next Riverscape.

12/2 - TALK TALK with A Ship in the Woods
The Conservancy is proud to partner with A Ship in the Woods
for TALK TALK, a multi-media live outdoor improvisational talk show created by visual artist Jason Sherry and host/personality Matt Hoyt.
Join us for a night of comedy, art, music, and social satire. Through improvisation and humor Talk Talk reflects on the complexities of life by embracing the absurdity and hilarity of what it has to offer. With extraordinary special guests, performances, and mind-bending sketches, each Talk Talk episode has viewers on the edge of their seat, waiting to find out what else the satirical twists and turns will bring each segment.
The Conservancy will debunk wildfire myths in the media and provide information on our Citizen Science Monitoring program, plus showcase an interactive "green" piece.

12/2 - Crest Canyon Hike
Join San Diego Canyonlands and City of San Diego Open Space Park Rangers on a free interpretive hike of Crest Canyon. Learn how to identify unique native plants, the importance of our urban canyons to our ecosystem, and discover how you can get more involved in this beautiful open space.
The hike will be a partial loop of 2.2 miles with some hills and partial shade. Please bring water and wear sun protection and sturdy shoes.
When: Saturday, December 2nd from 9:00 to 11:00 a.m.

12/3 - San Pasqual Battle Day
One cold and wet December morning in 1846, the Army of the West under the command General Stephen Watts Kearny had received intelligence that a contingent of Californio lancers was in the vicinity of the San Pasqual Valley.
Originally starting in Kansas, the Americans had just completed the longest march in US military history and were eager to engage their enemy. What was intended to be a surprise attack ended up being the bloodiest battle in California during the Mexican-American War in which the Army of the West suffered heavy losses.
Afterwards, the Americans limped their way to Mule Hill where they remained surrounded for nearly three days before they were relieved by a larger force and made it to San Diego.
Every year, the San Dieguito River Park participates in Battle Day, which is organized by the San Pasqual Battlefield Volunteer Association and California State Parks. SDRP will be present with a table where we will interpret the events that took place at Mule Hill, after the Battle of San
Pasqual.
With interpretive events such as these, we are able to promote local history which can be found in the park and along the Coast to Crest Trail. Join us on December 3 rd from 11:00 am to 3:00 pm at San Pasqual Battlefield State Historic Park, find the River Park's table, and learn how Mule Hill got its name!

12/4 - Buy a Bird a Beer Fundraiser
We're getting together with our friends at Viewpoint Brewing Co. in Del Mar (right on the Lagoon!) for a fundraiser. Get a special edition glass to take home when you "buy a bird a beer!"

12/9 - Furry Friends Hike
Bring your dog(s) and join other animal lovers and the San Dieguito River Valley Conservancy for an easy and family-friendly Furry Friends Hike at the Piedras Pintadas Trail (approximately 4 miles).
When:
Saturday, December 9th from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m.
Where:
Bernardo Bay Natural Area
Cost: Free -- Hikers are encouraged to bring a donation of dog and cat food to support the Helen Woodward Animal Center.

12/10 - Festive Farmhouse
Join us for a farmstead holiday celebration at Sikes Adobe Historic Farmstead! Remember colored paper chains, stringing popcorn, and making homemade ornaments? Remember the smell of cloves in oranges or mulling spices?
Come decorate the 1880s Sikes Adobe Historic Farmstead, and make decorations similar to those of the San Pasqual Valley pioneers to take home with you!
We will have farmhouse tours, materials for decorating, hot drinks, and cookies. Listen to Christmas music and spend some time relaxing in our Victorian parlor.

Family Volunteer Day
A stellar group of hard-working, energetic volunteers joined us for Family Volunteer Day at Sikes Adobe Historic Farmstead last month! We removed invasive species and planted natives as part of this worldwide day of service promoted by
generationOn.

Thanks-for-Giving Potluck
The Conservancy hosted its inaugural "Thanks-for-Giving" potluck with its volunteers at Felicita County Park in November. We enjoyed lots of delicious food and toured A Ship in the Woods, one of our newest partners.

#OptOutside in Gonzales Canyon
Despite it being just a little warmer than we're used to this time of year, we had a great time taking part in REI's #OptOutside movement for the third time! We explored Gonzales Canyon with San Diego Canyonlands and the City of San Diego Open Space Rangers, identified native plants, and learned about the importance of urban canyons in our local ecosystem. Thanks to all who joined us!

Dot to Dot Academy Field Trip
On November 22nd, Dot to Dot Academy visited the San Dieguito River Park at Lake Hodges. Dot to Dot Academy is a preschool and afterschool program that uses non-traditional tools to make students rethink about the world around them.
The field trip to Lake Hodges taught students more about the importance of the natural world in their community. The San Dieguito River Park is focused on outdoor education programs to teach students about their natural environment so they can better understand thus want to protect the environment for all.
