Securing Australia’s plant health status
The future of Australia’s plant health status will receive a significant boost via a $330,000 government-funded trial of AUSPestCheck as part of the National Plant Health Surveillance Program, which collects critical information on plant pests to support Australia’s plant industries. The funding is for Plant Health Australia to conduct the trial, which could provide a range of biosecurity and trade benefits for Australian agriculture. More about AUSPestCheck here .

New Plant Innovation Centre at post-entry quarantine facility
A new Plant Innovation Centre (PIC) has been launched at the Mickleham Post-Entry Quarantine (PEQ) facility. The PIC@PEQ will progress a range of projects focused on improving Australia’s plant biosecurity measures, including investigations of mobile applications for front line inspectors to conduct plant diagnostics, and more efficient and effective diagnostic platforms, such as next generation sequencing. The centre will also progress improved treatments to help manage some of the most significant plant pests for Australia, including Xylella fastidiosa.

Don’t forget to water!
The Bureau of Meteorology’s climate outlook for December to February is for warmer than average daytime temperatures for southeast, central and far northern Australia, and warmer than average night-time temperatures for northern, central and southeastern Australia and along the southern WA coastline.

Warmer temperatures mean an increased need for water in your grove – and as most growers now know, this is one of the most important times to ensure adequate irrigation for your trees to ensure a bountiful crop.

Don’t miss the feature article on water needs across the olive growing cycle in the December edition of Olivegrower & Processor – coming to your letterbox soon. And if you’re not a subscriber, you can do so here .
