COLD WEATHER SHELTER VOLUNTEER TRAINING

Sierra Roots held a training for volunteers to help us when we open the Cold Weather Shelter this winter.

We were able to organize and train five teams of volunteers: overnight monitors, intake and set up volunteers, dinner providers, morning clean up and breakfast providers.

If you are interested in volunteering for the cold weather shelter, please call Janice O'Brien, for the next available training dates: 530 265-5403.

A Place to Call Home:
Stories Inspiring Transformation

will be at the Center for the Arts in Grass Valley on November 16th . This innovative,
multi-media experience, includes a gallery show in the Granucci Gallery and Main Gallery and an incredible live event on the Main Stage from
7:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.  The event is free, but seating for the Main Stage is limited, and reservations  are required.  If you plan to attend, please reserve your seats soon, by visiting
 www.A-Place-To-Call-Home.org
, and using the link at the top of the Home Page.

The excitement is building. Artists are all confirmed for the Gallery Show and the Main Stage Event. Our beautiful 2018 Compassionate Action Wall Calendar is going to print so we will have it available at the event for $20. There will be a silent auction with some beautiful gifts for you, or for supporting programs in the county for homeless people.

SNEAK PREVIEW

The Gallery Show opens at 4:00 pm on November 16th, with an Artists' Reception with light appetizers and an opportunity to meet the exhibiting artists. The show runs through November 26th. We have six outstanding artists displaying fine art in several media - all with the theme of inspiring common humanity and compassion.

We are so pleased to have Kaia Smith, from the Young Composers Project through Music in the Mountains, joining us as part of the Main Stage Event. She will introduce her piece,  "Boxes",  composed for string quartet. This was composed after she spent time at Hospitality House Community Shelter getting to know the guests there.

Sierra Roots will be providing refreshments for the reception. If you are able to provide transportation for our homeless friends without vehicles, please call:
Dee at 478-1203

SIERRA ROOTS IN THE NEWS

Warming shelter options looking scarce for homeless in Nevada County as cold weather approaches

 Reprinted from:  The Union
Matthew Pera, October 15, 2017

The Salvation Army in Grass Valley won't operate a cold-weather warming shelter this year, leaving western Nevada County's homeless population with fewer places to find refuge during winter nights.
The Salvation Army's Major Ray Yant said the organization doesn't have an appropriate facility or enough funding to open a shelter.
Sierra Roots, an organization that serves Nevada County's chronically homeless population, renewed its agreement with Nevada City on Wednesday to use city-owned facilities to operate a warming shelter for up to 33 individuals.   READ MORE:

VOLUNTEER CORNER

What can we make with this? (by the way, who knows what it is?)

Thursday  luncheons with Sierra Roots is no ordinary affair.  Some of the dishes are very memorable and should be repeated and shared. That is why some of us have invented a way to save, share, and pass on the very best dishes.

We are putting a recipe book together of all these wonderful dishes. If you are one of the luncheon volunteers, please send me your recipe. It does not have to be exact. I know that many of us make up dishes as we go along. When you send your recipe, please tell me a little something about it - where it came from, perhaps some of the comments from the crowd enjoying your dish.

Send recipes to me: Frances Jorgensen,  fjorgen02@gmail.com . Call me with questions or comments: 265-4838.

Advocacy Update

Our friend, Dode McDermott, has recently been reunited with his beloved dog Sophie, and they are loving their time together.

Caryl Fairfull, Sierra Roots Advocate, has been assisting Dode  to get his SSI and  Sierra Roots has helped him find a home that allows Sophie to live with Dode. They live in Nevada City, where he grew up, and they love the town and the trees.

Miner Matt loves his lunch!

Gratitude to the many volunteers who bring hot, nutrient dense, delicious foods to our weekly meal program at Nevada City First Baptist Church.

Mary Kirby does an excellent job of organizing four weekly teams that keep folks' bellies full... also, with the amazing organization skills of Diane Thoele Weichel, everyone can leave with brand new pairs of socks, underwear, and gently used warm clean clothing!

VOLUNTEER MEETINGS

Next Monthly Volunteer Meeting:
November 9th, Thursday, at 1 PM
First Methodist Church ~ 433 Broad Street, Nevada City
 info@sierraroots.org *  530 264-5113

Our monthly meetings are intended for those who are just becoming acquainted with Sierra Roots and want to learn more about the various volunteer opportunities,  as well as for those already involved so everyone is up to date, informed and involved in discussion and planning.

Not everyone is aware of the many ways Sierra Roots engages and builds community with our homeless friends while we continue to look for land for our Village.  For example, Sierra Roots operates an emergency weather shelter, serves meals twice weekly, and provides advocacy services, to homeless individuals. You can learn about these and other volunteer opportunities at our monthly meetings.
