Contribute to ONEgeneration's Senior Meal Program
Often times seniors on fixed budgets have to decide whether to buy food for the month or pay for their medications. Studies have shown that seniors have a higher risk of falling if they are not receiving regular healthy, balanced meals. Bring a smile to the face of a senior in need this holiday by contributing to our senior meal program.

Adult Day Care

Dr. David Stern's Expert Corner
Heart disease is the leading cause of death in the United States. While more common in men than in women, it is actually the leading cause of death for both men and women. With this column, I begin a review of heart disease, a term that includes hypertension, coronary artery disease, heart attack, heart failure, and arrhythmia such as atrial fibrillation.

Hypertension, also known as high blood pressure, is a long-term medical condition in
which the blood pressure in the arteries is persistently elevated. Although hypertension rarely causes symptoms, long-term hypertension is a major risk factor for coronary artery disease, heart attack, stroke, heart failure, peripheral artery disease, vision loss, chronic kidney disease, and death.

Blood pressure is expressed by two measurements, systolic is the maximum, and diastolic the minimum. Normal systolic blood pressure at rest is within the range 100-130 and 60-80 diastolic. Hypertension is present if the resting blood pressure is persistently above 130/80.

Lifestyle changes and medication can lower blood pressure and decrease the risk of health
complications. Lifestyle changes include weight loss, decreased salt intake, limited alcohol
consumption, physical exercise, and a healthy diet rich in good fats and fiber, low in saturated
fats, cholesterol and salt. If lifestyle changes are not sufficient, then anti-hypertensive medications are used. Up to three medications can control blood pressure in 90% of people.

I usually tell patients that there are five different classes of medications to be considered. The choice of medication is made with an understanding of the risks vs benefits of each class of medication. The selection of specific medication may differ, but the goal remains the same, lower the blood pressure to an acceptable range while avoiding side effects, such as lightheadedness, dizziness, falls, or alteration of blood sodium or potassium levels.
Community Outreach
UCLA Alzheimer’s and Dementia Care program acknowledged their community partners at its event on Thursday, November 9th. Anna, Director of ONEgeneration's Adult Day Care was in attendance.

Walk n’ Talk

Mon, Wed, Fri
9:30 AM

Suggested Donation: $2

ONEgeneration hosts a Walk n’ Talk group on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays at 9:00 AM. The group walks for about 30-45 minutes and allows individuals to walk as fast or as slow as they like, taking breaks when needed. They take different routes around Reseda Park and an ONEgeneration employee accompanies the group.

Sylvia became a member of ONEgeneration in the spring of 2016. The first group she joined was Walk n’ Talk.  “[The group] gives me something to do and I don’t feel like I spent my whole day watching television.” Sylvia said. “Gets me out of the house three days a week. It’s good for me.” And there’s a bonus on Fridays. “I get to go to Bingo after we’re done [walking].”

Childcare
The month of November was exciting as our little ones have been talking and preparing for the holidays. Around this time of the year, we can literally feel the excitement children go through as families prepare for the different festivities. On behalf of ONEgeneration, I would like to thank each of our parents for entrusting their precious children to our care. We are fortunate and humbled to serve as role models for your children and learn so much from them. On Thursday, December 14 th , we will hold our annual holiday party for our parents where children and families will be able to go from classroom to classroom, enjoy different activities and eat dinner.

Respectfully,
