From the Carpenter's bench:

"A wise man will make more opportunities than he finds."
- Sir Francis Bacon

Taking advantage of our opportunities is extremely important. My family and I went to Memphis to see my sister and father for Thanksgiving last week and I told my wife that this would be a "no swim" vacation. To my surprise, my oldest son secretly hatched a plan with my wife to swim with an age group team at the University of Memphis for two of the days we were there. I find that this passion that my son has is incredible. As much as I wanted to say "no," how could I hinder a passion that he himself has--that is driven by him? It is admirable: my wife and I will continue to feed and cultivate it.

Along these same lines, faith is a gift from God. We might compare it to someone's gift of seed to a farmer. He can bring only one sack to be filled, or he can bring 100 sacks. God proportions God's gifts to our readiness to receive them. And when the farmer receives the seed, he can plant it and cultivate it. Or he can store it and ignore it. The same option is open to us when it comes to God's gift of faith. We all must feed our faith and passion! Opportunities are all around us, but it is our job to take advantage, seize the moment, and cultivate our faith and passions!

This raises an important question: How am I cultivating my faith and passion? Remember to feed these as we enter this wonderful season of Giving!

Operation Christmas Child Project Nicaragua 2017

Dear Parents and Students,

It is my second year heading this project at St. Joseph Catholic High School, and I am inspired by the student's involvement in the Operation Christmas Child Project.  This Christmas, I will be traveling to my hometown in Nicaragua where I will have the chance to deliver these Christmas boxes.    Last year, our first year with this project, we've collected 156 boxes, and this year we will have over 300.  Students are bringing their filled boxes daily, and I enjoy hearing the stories of students telling me how much they enjoyed putting these boxes together.   One student that has inspired me in this project is Hannah Olsen.  She took it upon herself to work with her theater group in Salt Lake City, and she has distributed 70 boxes.   I also want to extend my sincere thanks to Dr. Serbinowska for promoting this project with The National Honor Society students.

In closing, thank you and have a blessed Christmas 2017 and a Happy New Year 2018

Sub for Santa

The Diocese of Salt Lake is doing the Sub For Santa project again this year. Sub For Santa is a gift giving opportunity for underprivileged families. We have been given 10 individuals to purchase for. We have NHS that will take on 4 kids, and the rest of the student body will take on the other 6. I realize there is some over lap, but at least everyone will be covered. I've divided the list into classes.

The way it worked last year, we collected gifts and monetary donations. With the monetary donations we were able to provide every person with their wish list items. Rhonda Ingram did the shopping for us and it was a big hit. We will then wrap, tag and deliver all of the packages on the  20th of December, immediately following dismissal.

I will be announcing the class situation and how the process works at prayer all week with the kids.

I appreciate your support in all of this. I would like to have us all send something out to our classes with specific information on what the expectations are. If people are unable to give, we just ask that they come and wrap with us;) Everyone can get involved in some way.

Thanks again for your support and Happy Holidays!
