The Borough of Avalon is working toward.....

The town of Avalon is working towards moving the Community Rating System (CRS) rating class from 5 to 4. The rating move would add to the discount Borough homeowners receive on federal flood insurance, increasing the discount above the current 25% - 30% discount. At the moment, the Borough is entering a program to have Stockton University's Coastal Research Center aid in the development of a Storm Water Management Plan. That is a component of a Watershed Management Plan which is a requirement for Class 4 status.
Avalon entered the Community Rating System in 1996 and was the first municipality in the county to achieve a Class 5 status.
Seventh Annual Barefoot Ball Success

The Helen L. Diller Vacation Home for Blind Children hosted their seventh annual Barefoot Ball on September 9th at the Windrift Hotel; with more than 300 people in attendance; the event raised more than $350,000!
The event provides funding to give blind and visually impaired children an all expense-paid week of summer camp at the Diller Vacation Home; which has been providing children an opportunity to enjoy the island every summer since 1972.
Townsends Inlet Bridge to Accept EZ Pass

The Cape May County Bridge Commission, who operates the Middle Thorofare Bridge (otherwise known as Townsend's Inlet Bridge) connecting Avalon & Sea Isle City is in process of installing EZ Pass in the hope of easing traffic flow. Initially the project was slated to be completed by the end of May 2017 but repair to the Townsend's Inlet bridge in June and July 2017 caused the project to be delayed.
Adding EZ Pass is one of several changes the commission hopes to make in the future. Earlier this year the commission authorized a study that could lead to a possible bridge replacement.

Tree Lighting and Caroling in Stone Harbor

Stop into town on Wednesday, December 6th for an afternoon of caroling; followed by the annual tree lighting ceremony. An afternoon of Christmas cheer begins at 4:45 pm in front of Borough Hall with a trolley ride around town and caroling. At 6:00 pm join Mayor Davies-Dunhour, members of council and the Stone Harbor and Avalon Elementary faculty for the tree lighting ceremony at 9508 Second Avenue. Follow up at 6:30 pm with a trip to the Stone Harbor Firehouse for refreshments and pictures with Olaf!
For more information on all listed activities; please call the Stone Harbor Recreation Department.

 Fishing is Big Business!!!

$85 million - that's the value of Southern Cape May County's commercial fishing industry, according to a recently released Federal report! And as measured by dollar volume, the combined port of Cape May/Wildwood ranks as the 2nd biggest on the East Coast and the 9th biggest in the Nation!  Scallops are one of the largest contributors of the 'dollar volume' and the waters off NJ have been extremely productive for scallops.

Fish On!
For those of you who prefer to catch your own seafood, c'mon down! This time of year is excellent for tautog, seabass and striped bass fishing! While fishing this time of year, you'll often see large whales feeding within just a few miles of the beach! In fact, TODAY the whales were about one mile off the beach, just North of Townsends Inlet!

Steel Poles in Stone Harbor Stir Debate

Stone Harbor's 70 foot tall steel electric poles were the topic of conversation at a recent Stone Harbor council work session. Announced by Mayor Judith Davies-Dunhour; the Borough's Planning Board had retained services to conduct an independent analysis of the feasibility and costs of removing the existing poles and burying electric transmission lines to the substation on 60th Street.
The steel poles have been a hot topic of conversation with Stone Harbor home owners since their installation in October 2016.
Avalon Receives Funding for Open Space Projects

The Borough of Avalon recently received approval of two grants that total approximately $2.07 million dollars for two major projects that will greatly benefit the town.  The Board of Chosen Freeholders approved two heritage projects on November 14th. The funding ensures residents and visitors the ability to enjoy extraordinary recreation and cultural opportunities.
The grant allocates nearly $2 million for the creation of a new Surfside Park; to be located adjacent to the Avalon Boardwalk at 30th Street and the beach. Surfside Park will consist of new playground equipment, a small elevated berm that will face a small performance stage for concerts, performances, and activities for children. It will also include new bathroom facilities, rinsing stations and a changing station for folks down for the day. Also included; new playground equipment and a brand new gazebo. The remaining $70,000 in funding will be used for the expansion and connectivity of Avalon's popular bicycle path which currently exists on Dune Drive.
The completion date for the upgraded Surfside Park with construction starting in September, 2018;  is anticipated for May, 2019; the expansion bicycle path is to be completed before the end of 2017.
