- WCRG has a student Volunteer Team called CURES (Cancer Undergraduate Research and Education Students). Our CURES Team develop fun, interactive activities to educate the public about cancer research. Let us know if you would like them to participate in your next event!
- Windsor Regional Hospital is the home of the Clinical Trials Department. It is comprised of 5 staff - 4 Study Coordinators and 1 Business Coordinator. Clinical trials are an important part of any successful cancer research network

Cancer Researcher for a Day was Launched!
|
On November 10th and 13th, WCRG launched
Cancer Researcher for a Day. This program uses research as a tool to empower children/youth and their families through their cancer journey, and encourage them to be research ambassadors. We were thrilled to pilot the program with
Dereck Lau (a brain cancer survivor) and younger sister
Morgyn. They were enthusiastic participants, and also provided great feedback that will help us grow the program.

This program is made possible with the generous support of the
Windsor Cancer Centre Foundation and the University of Windsor, Faculty of Science Service Learning Program. Youshaa El-Abed (program intern) and Donika Yakoub (volunteer mentee), both undergraduate students, worked with WCRG to develop and implement the program and were key to the success of the two days.

WCRG's First Open House a Big Success
|
WCRG hosted its first annual Trick or Treat Cancer - Halloween Open House. Thanks to the organization and activities developed by our CURES Team, the event was a big success! Participants had fun with our Spin the Cancer Wheel, Cancer IQ Test, Dress the Researcher, and Guess the Cancer games. They also received glitter tattoos, treats and prizes.

Mark Your Calendars for the 2018 Think Tanks!

On October 27th, WCRG held it's 7th Think Tank!
The goal of these sessions is to bring people together and share research ideas in an effort to build collaborative projects and increase the number of cancer research grant submissions. Summaries of the past sessions can be found on our website.
Now is the time to mark your calendar for the 2018 Think Tanks.
The events run from 1:30 - 4pm and alternate between the University of Windsor and Windsor Regional Hospital.
- January 12 at Windsor Regional Hospital
- April 20 at UWindsor
- July 20 at Windsor Regional Hospital
- October 19 at UWindsor

Getting to Know Our Local Cancer Researchers

WCRG continues to partner with snapd Windsor to highlight WCRG cancer researchers. Interviews are found in the print edition of snapd Windsor and shared through various newsletters and announcements. build collaborations. Here are a few of your latest successes.
Diane Marley, Martha Marks and Katherine Vanderhaeghe John, Erie St Clair Regional Cancer Program, Patient & Family Advisory Committee. Diane received the Erie St Clair Regional Cancer Program Summit Award in the Volunteer category for her work on the My Cancer Journey Resource - a practical guide for patients and their families. Diane spoke at a WCRG Think Tank this year to share with us the importance of research from a survivor's perspective.
Lisa Porter, Department of Biological Sciences, University of Windsor, WE-Tech Alliance 2017 Tech Researcher of the Year
Swati Kulkarni (Local PI), Medical Oncologist, Windsor Regional Hospital Cancer Program, A Randomized Trial of Durvalumab and Tremelimumab +/- Platinum Based Chemotherapy in Patients with High-Risk Metastatic (Stage IV) Squamous or Non-Squamous Non-Small Cell Lung Cancer (NSCLC)- Trial being conducted through the Canadian cancer trials group (CCTG)- Canadian chair- Dr. Natasha Leighl. Project is supported by Caesars Windsor Concerts for a Cure 2017 with a proposed amount of $10,000.
