Greetings,
I am very pleased to announce that after a thorough search  process, Dorothea Warren has been appointed as SLA's next executive director. She brings a wealth of knowledge and expertise to the association and I look forward to working with Dorothea. Judy Nicholson's last day is December 8 and she will work closely with Ms. Warren until then. Read the official announcement. I am very grateful to have worked closely with Judy and I have learned much. All the best in your well-deserved retirement Judy!

CFLA-FCAB is seeking individuals to serve on our new Intellectual Freedom
Committee.
They are looking for broad national representation from different library sectors for individuals who value the principles of intellectual freedom and will actively participate in the work of the committee.

More Than Words: Translating a Path to Global Awareness

There is an Italian adage, traduttore traditore, which means something close to translator is traitor. It's funny because, aside from the questions it raises about the fidelity of translation, it puns on the similarity of the words. Translated to English, of course, the pun disappears. On the other hand, it becomes an autology - a perfect example of itself.
You can learn a lot about a culture by how they tell a story. However traitorous it may be, translation offers a glimpse into cultures and viewpoints that would otherwise remain unavailable. If we in Canada truly value diversity and inclusivity, books (and particularly those for children) must be important early exposures to the spectrum of cultures, values and storytelling.
To find out more about contemporary considerations of picture book translation, Canadian Children's Book News spoke with the following publishers, rights directors, editors and translators. We discussed books translated for the Canadian market (buy-ins), Canadian books translated abroad (selling rights) and what it takes to be a great book in translation (that can travel).

In 2018 the Saskatchewan Libraries Conference is being held at the Double Tree by Hilton in Regina on Thursday May 3rd and Friday May 4th as part of a week-long convergence of national library leaders:
- Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL) Members Meeting - May 1st
- Canadian Urban Libraries Council (CULC) Meeting - May 1st
- Canadian Federation of Library Associations/ Fédération canadienne des associations de bibliothéques (CFLA-FCAB) National Forum - May 2nd
- SLA Conference - May 3rd and 4th
The theme, Libraries! Convergence Under Living Skies speaks to the opportunity for libraries of all types and from many places to work together.
SLA along with all provincial, territorial, and regional library associations are members of CFLA-FCAB.

A Teen Essay Contest
Saskatchewan Library Week - October 15 - 21, 2017
First Place - Hanna S.
Hanna is a Grade 11 student attending Ogema School. She is the daughter of Curt and Candace along with her younger sister. Hanna has two dogs, a cat, and a fish and in her spare time she enjoys caring for animals, learning new things, and creating art pieces.
Second Place -
Sierra H: Sierra is a 16 year old student living in the small town of Ogema, Saskatchewan. She enjoys being as involved in her community and school as she can be. She is on the school SRC. She works at the town's daycare and loves working with kids!
Third Place - Kelsey A.: Kelsey is a 16 year old student from Ogema, Saskatchewan. She is an avid reader, and enjoys popular fantasy novels, as well as science fiction, mystery, and various other YA genres.

Name: Katelyn Haskell
Title: Library Technician
Born and lived: Born in Kelvington, SK., raised in Preeceville, SK. Living in Saskatoon currently.
Early Life: I grew up in a small town and always had a love for reading and books, however at that time, the public library and school library in my town were in desperate need of resources. It wasn't until after moving to Saskatoon that I truly saw what a  library could be.
After high school I went to the University of Saskatchewan where I completed my B.A. in Religious Traditions. After that, I immediately enrolled in the SIAST (now known as Saskatchewan Polytechnic) Library and Information Technology program. I received my diploma and went to work
After 6 years as the Literacy and Learning Partnerships Coordinator at the Provincial Library and Literacy Office, Catherine Howett will be taking up a new position Dec 4, 2017 as Senior Program Analyst with the Ministry of the Economy in the Apprenticeship and Workforce Skills Branch. Her new focus areas will be Adult Basic Education, Adult Literacy and training programs. Catherine bids a fond adieu to the Summer Reading Working Group and wishes them all the best with their STEAM programming in Summer 2018.

Operations Manager will b
e retiring from Lakeland Library Region after over 15 years of service. During this time-frame, Lane has worked in a variety of different roles, including supervising the rural library branches, helping with collection development, supporting regional programs such as the TD Summer Reading Program and taking a lead in new programming offerings such as the ever popular Lakeland Summer Players.

RPL's Regent Place Branch Partners with SLA for
Library: Behind the Scenes
SLA is very excited to be the community partner of the Regent Place Branch for their "Library: Behind the Scenes" event on Saturday December 9 from 1-4pm and located at 331 Albert St. in Regina in the Market Mall.
This interactive, educational event will help to showcase all the things that help make a modern public library so much more than books - CD's, DVD's, magazines, video games, programs, computer access, community outreach, meeting spaces, cutting edge technology like 3D printers and digital media studios and much much more.

The University of Regina will host the
2018 Congress of the Humanities and Social Sciences . The 87th annual Congress will take place May 26 to June 1, 2018. More than 7,000 attendees are expected at Canada's largest academic gathering. Over 70 scholarly associations will hold their annual conference, have presentations, etc.
Library workers in Saskatchewan may be interested to know that four library sector societies will be at Congress:
All four local arrangement coordinators work at the University of Regina Library and they can be contacted with questions about their respective society/association. Updates about planned activities and dates will be available in SLAte leading up to the start of Congress.
Bibliographical Society of Canada (BSC) is currently accepting proposals for its annual conference at Congress 2018 at the University of Regina on May 29-30, 2018. Attached is the BSC's first call for papers in English and French.

Everyone, Including Culture, Wins When You Buy Lottery Tickets
The core funding that SLA receives through SaskCulture is part of the Lottery Trust where a percentage of every lottery ticket sold goes to support sport, culture and recreation groups within Saskatchewan. It appears that recent lottery sales are not meeting expectations, which will not have an immediate effect on SLA. However we encourage you to remind audiences and arts council members that buying lottery tickets benefits the entire community. Saskatchewan Lotteries has also launched an app that you can download in the App Store or Google Play. More information is available on the Saskatchewan Lotteries website.
