Thomas M. DeLauro, DPM ('76) to Retire
 Professor and Chair of Medical Sciences, Thomas M. DeLauro, DPM, will retire at the end of December. Adjunct Clinical Professor of Medical Science
The career of David H. George, DPM ('72) has combined hands-on practice, teaching, and work to improve podiatric medicine and health in general. He received his BS in biology from St. John Fisher College in Rochester, NY in 1968, and graduated cum laude from NYCPM in 1972. Peter Barbosa, PhD, Brings Supplies to Puerto Rico
On October 12 and again on November 18, Peter Barbosa, PhD, NYCPM Professor in Pre-Clinical Sciences, visited his native Puerto Rico with five suitcases filled with needed basic supplies that he personally distributed in towns bereft of services and stores as a result of the devastation wrought by Hurricane Maria on September 20. ... NYCPM Receives Rhett Foundation's Initial Gift
In October, Bradley Bakotic, DPM, DO and NYCPM President and CEO Louis L. Levine, announced that the new Rhett Foundation for the Advancement of Podiatric Medicine has made its initial gift, an unrestricted grant of $100,000 to NYCPM. "We are delighted that, true to its name, Rhett has chosen to support NYCPM with its first gift. We are looking forward to a close working relationship with Dr. Bakotic," said President Levine.

In addition to funding institutions of podiatric medical education, the new foundation will also make educational grants to support University and CME lectures, grants to non-profit organizations, and will fund scientific research; the foundation is currently supporting the development of a textbook in podiatric dermatology. The Rhett Foundation for the Advancement of Podiatric Medical Education's principals are Bradley Bakotic, DPM, DO and Joseph "Jody" Hackel, MD.

New Staff in Student Services and FCNY
 Please welcome Charles Barnes, MS, NYCPM's new Student Housing Coordinator, who replaced Lee Blackwell in mid-October. Charles has an MS degree in College Student Affairs from Nova Southeastern University in Ft. Lauderdale, FL and had previously studied history at the University of New Haven. Charles says his degree has prepared him for exactly this position.
Also welcome physical therapist Briana Ramirez, DPT, who earned both  her BS and DPT from Nazareth College in Rochester, NY. Previously she had worked at Professional Physical Therapy, the largest out-patient orthopedic physical therapy facility in the northeast.

Mark Young Lectures at NYCPM Range from Anatomy to Biomechanics
Mark A. Young, MD, Chair of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at the Maryland Rehabilitation Center/The Workforce & Technology Center and faculty member, The Johns Hopkins School of Medicine, UMMS, made a presentation on November 5, a Sunday, for Resident/Student Continuing Education. In a series of
lectures, Dr. Young sought to review the anatomy of the knee and hip; provide an overview of how the foot and ankle influence other lower extremity joints and spinal structures; discuss the biomechanical origin of common painful conditions affecting the knee and hip; explore the relationship between faulty foot mechanics, gait abnormality and ankle, hip and spine disorders; and neurological and biomechanical basics.

Arthur Gudeon, DPM ('60) Raises Funds for Lustgarten Foundation
The Lustgarten Foundation Research Walk for the Cure of Pancreatic Cancer took place in early October at Jones Beach. Arthur Gudeon, DPM ('60) and his "Team Sue's Crewsers" once again walked (in the pouring rain and wind this time) in memory of his wife, Susan, who passed from that dreadful disease in 2012. They collected over $4000 for that worthy cause. Dr. Gudeon (wearing red hood, center) thanked all who supported and donated in her memory, including walkers Minna Scholl (Class of 2021) and Lina Dobronevsky, an NYCPM January applicant (and her son).

In Memoriam
Milton Lapoff, DPM ('56) Dies at 87
Milton Lapoff, DPM ('56)
, has passed away at the age of 87. An NYCPM faculty member from 1958-61, he practiced in both New York (1956-81) and Florida (1982-2010).
Dr. Lapoff had been president of the Queens County Podiatry Association and the Palm Beach County (FL) Podiatric Medical Association. While he lived in New York, Dr. Lapoff served as medical advisor to the
Queens County Supreme Court. Source:

Ross ('14) Joins Family's Practice
NYCPM alum Gabriel A. Ross, DPM ('14) has joined the practice of Deborah S. Ross, DPM ('87), his mother, in Briarcliff Manor, NY. Gabriel is the third generation of the Ross family to practice podiatry including his late grandfather, Dr. Sidney Ross. Gabriel completed his residency at Wyckoff Heights Medical Center in Brooklyn. Ethan Buhl ('18) Wins NYCPM Michael Stone Award
Susan Rice, DPM ('88), Chair of NYCPM's Scholarship Committee, has announced that this year's NYCPM winner of the ABFAS-sponsored Michael Stone Award is Ethan Buhl (2018), who was  selected from a field of qualified candidates. ABFAS presents this award annually to one fourth-year student from each of the nine podiatric schools.
Ethan's award will consist of a plaque, cash award, and expenses-paid attendance at the Annual ACFAS Scientific Meeting (March 22-25, 2018 in Nashville).

Library Receives NY State Grant
NYCPM's Sidney Druskin Memorial Library was awarded the Coordinated Collection Development Aid Grant from New York State. The $4,692.00 grant will be applied to the purchase of print and online material, including e-books.
