Program Description

The PCC Extension Program continues its series on Psychoanalysis Today with presentations by Founding Faculty members. In the first session, Dr. Shirley Gooch will present her clinical material from the analysis of four-year-old Sam, suffering from autism. Sam began treatment mute, lacked relationships with anyone around him, and could neither draw nor play. Essential elements in the analysis were identifying his emotions, bearing emotional attunement, introjecting a caring other and loving couple, and the joy of being able to express in speech and symbolization these new-found, or re-found, experiences. Dr. James Gooch will assist with the presentation and provide discussion. A discussion and question-and-answer period will follow.

In the second session Dr. Shirley Gooch will explore some current research in treating autism, the numbers of children and adults who suffer from the disorder, and the clinical psychoanalytic practices that bring relief and change, growth and development, and an alive child within the family. She will include the classical clinical insights of Donald Meltzer, Frances Tustin, and Wilfred Bion. Of central importance is speech and the impenetrable aloneness of the child or adult who lacks "inner mental activity of verbalization and its outward manifestation vocalization."

Audience
MD's, Psychologists, LCSW's, MFT's, Registered Nurses, and other learners interested in developing psychoanalytic understanding.

Course Objectives
At the end of this activity, participants will be able to:
1. Help the child patient develop speech within the emotional ambivalence of the transference;
2.  Identify the introjection of a helpful thinking/talking maternal object as a precondition for speech;
3.  Develop the therapeutic ability to use art and play in treatment as a means of bringing about the capacity for symbolization.
Program Faculty
Dr. Shirley Gooch, registered nurse, psychologist, and psychoanalyst, was a Founding Faculty Member of PCC. She is a Training and Supervising Psychoanalyst in both the adult and child programs, one of the founders of the Infant, Child, and Adolescent Psychoanalysis Program (ICAPP) and the Infant Observation Program. She has served PCC as Dean, has been a faculty member at Reiss-Davis Child Study Center, and is an Adjunct Faculty Member at the New Center for Psychoanalysis. Dr. Gooch is in private practice with children and adults in Beverly Hills.

Dr. James Gooch, psychiatrist and psychoanalyst, has been in practice with children and adults in Beverly Hills since the 1960s. He presented in "Psychoanalysis Today" in September 2016, at the first meeting of the anniversary celebration of PCC's thirty years of training psychoanalysts. His organizational skills made the Psychoanalytic Center of California Society a reality in 1984; the Training Institute began in 1987; the Infant, Child, and Adolescent Psychoanalytic Program (ICAPP) began in 1999. He is the Founding President of PCC, a Training Analyst at PCC and New Center for Psychoanalysis, former Chief Psychoanalyst at Reiss-Davis Child Study Center, former Clinical Professor of Psychiatry at USC, and served on the Board of Directors of the International Psychoanalytic Society.
