First place:
Adobe Analytics Challenge
Tauber student Erica Kirshensteyn (MBA '19) and her Ross teammates Rei Liao and Rajiv Khattar won first place in the Adobe Analytics Challenge! This year's Challenge drew 150 submissions from 70 programs, with only six teams selected to present in the finals on November 3.

Professor Jagadish selected as AAAS Fellow
Congratulations to Professor of Electrical Engineering and Computer Science H.V. Jagadish, elected to the fellows of the American Association for the Advancement of Science. New AAAS Fellows will be recognized during the Fellows Forum at the 2018 AAAS Annual Meeting in Austin, TX. In addition to his distinguished teaching and research, Prof. Jagadish is familiar to Tauber alumni through his role as a Tauber Team Project advisor for Raytheon in 2008, and for Cisco in 2010 and 2011.

Tauber Associate Director Jon Grice has accepted an exciting opportunity with the University of Michigan Business Engagement Center (BEC). For the past five years, Jon has been an integral part of Tauber; his whole-hearted efforts to meet and exceed the expectations of Tauber students, corporate partners, and faculty will be greatly missed. A passion for finance and engineering
We caught up with Tauber alumna Sherry House (MBA, M. Eng, '98) as she was about to take on an exciting new finance role at Waymo, formerly known as Google Self-Driving Car Project. Sherry started as an engineer at GM Electric, and then leveraged her Tauber experience to build a career in finance in the automotive and technology industries.

Industry Director Muscat on the road
Industry Director Ray Muscat is taking the Tauber philosophy to the conference circuit. Recently Ray was the keynote speaker for the c3XPO at DTE Headquarters, where he shared his experience leading the team that developed the Herman Miller Performance System. Ray also presented for
the 2017 Maryland World Class Consortia Lean Conference this Fall.

2018 Spring break: Tauber Trek Germany
Tauber students have the opportunity to spend their Spring break examining operations in Germany. The Tauber Trek will travel to Frankfurt, Berlin, and surrounding areas, where students will tour operations at Fresenius, gramm.genau, Deutsche Bahn, Siemens, kFw Banking Group, Amazon, Restlos Glucklich, Mercedes Benz, BMW motorcycles, Pfizer, and soulbottles, as well as enjoy German culture and cuisine.

An Uncommon Education
To commemorate the U-M bicentennial, Detroit Public Television is airing a series of features titled "An Uncommon Education," culminating in a TV special at the end of the year. The November feature, "An Innovative Spirit," showcases how the College of Engineering, Ross School of Business, and schools and institutes across the Michigan campus foster entrepreneurship.

Tauber solutions:
A completely connected factory
The challenge: Stanley Engineered Fastening (SEF) engaged their 2017 Tauber Team to expand Stanley's Smart Factory Initiative to their warehouse operations, to fulfill the vision of a completely connected factory with an intuitive warehouse operation that enables workers to act with minimal intervention by management. The team's goal: a 20% increase in productivity, for approximately $400,000 in savings.
The solution: The Tauber Team's recommendations are estimated to save the SEF distribution center more than $910K in one year-more than double the original savings target. Here are some of the ways they did it:
- Reduced cycle time by 45% by automating scanning verification process, after identifying product verification process as bottleneck.
- Improved information flow: provided supervisors with real-time data to promote intuitive decision-making, and developed three dashboards to help supers track order status throughout the distribution center.
- Used wearable scanners and voice technology to improve the picking process.
- Evaluated solutions for an automated line for weigh-packed product.
- Recommended Kanban and an organization redesign to help manage inventory levels, reduce out-of-stocks, and improve communication with manufacturing.
