A Community Blitz

Whirlpool/IU Kelley/Habitat Build 2017

For the 8th year, Indiana University, the Kelley School of Business and the Whirlpool Corporation joined forces to build a home. The blitz started from a simple foundation on the IU campus to a completed home in 10 days! As part of the dedication, the keys were presented to Irving Castaneda-Baltazar on the field before the IU/Michigan football game. Last, but not least, the house was moved from the IU campus to its final location. Thank you to the 400 volunteers, numerous businesses and the Bloomington community who showed their support of Habitat and our community!

A Journey from Hardship to Habitat Home

The Hernandez Family

Life's challenges have been sometimes  difficult for Soccoro Hernandez. Many years ago, she decided to travel back and forth from the U.S. to Mexico to financially support her family of five. More personal hardships came to Soccoro after she made roots in Bloomington. But this hard working mother has overcome obstacles by believing that "You get strong by caring about other people."

Since then, Soccoro began to rebuild her life, and applied for a Habitat home. She has diligently worked at ReStore earning her 250 sweat equity hours, participated in Habitat's homeownership classes, and is excited to receive the keys to her new home.
