A Note from the Principal

As we flip the calendar to December, we see it packed full of high school events. We just completed the most successful Thanksgiving Meal give-away in recent memory. Over 130 families enjoyed a turkey or ham meal thanks to our students, staff, parents and community partners. It was our 3rd annual "Hunger Games" event that allowed our Houses at school to reach out to our homes in the community to make the holidays something very special.

Friday December 1st is a "two-hour delay" start for students. (school begins at 9:25am). Our teachers and staff will be continuing their education with professional development from our district curriculum department.

Our wonderful Hayes Choirs and Orchestra will be at many holiday events around town in the month of December and the choir will perform their holiday concert on Monday December 11th at 7:00pm. The All City Band Concert is Monday December 18th in the Hayes Gymnasium.

Semester Exams will be Monday December 18th, Tuesday December 19th and Wednesday December 20th. To insure students do not have more than three exams per day, students will be on a special exam schedule. The exams are in the morning with make-up times provided in the afternoon. A special transportation schedule has been developed to take students home to their closest elementary school right after lunch. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact the school.

Thank you to all of you for your support and involvement this first semester. This is a special community with high expectations for its young people. We will continue to work hard to help prepare your sons and daughters with a solid academic foundation, a strong desire to learn and to make a positive impact on the world we live in. Thank you so much!

Ohio State Test Retakes:

Beginning Monday December 4 through Friday December 15, Hayes will be administering Ohio State graduation test retakes, known as OST. OSTs are the required tests for graduation that replaced the OGT.  In addition to retakes, first semester 12th grade students in government will be taking their government test.  Those students needing a retake were mailed a letter home before Thanksgiving identifying which tests will be administered to them.  These students will also be receiving a reminder letter this week in school identifying where to report and which day(s) to report.  All testing will begin at the start of school.

The schedule for retakes is as follows:

Monday 12/4 - Government & US Studies
Tuesday 12/5 - Algebra 1
Wednesday 12/6 - Geometry
Thursday 12/7 - ELA 1 (ELA stands for English/Language Arts)
Friday 12/8 - ELA 2
Monday 12/11 - Biology
Missed testing retakes will follow through the remainder of the week.  Attendance for these retakes is VITAL.  Many Seniors needs these exams for graduation.  This is their last opportunity to take the exam to meet graduation requirements.  Although there is Spring testing, those results are not received from the state until after graduation.

A Note from the Attendance Office

College Visits:
Many of your students are beginning the college application process.  While this is an exciting period in a student's/family's life, it also requires that proper protocol be followed in order for the student to be granted access to her/his missing work and for this visit to not count against them from an attendance perspective.  Effective immediately, a college visit is only deemed as School Approved if it is turned into the Attendance office prior to the visit on a Pre Arranged Absence Form or if the student turns in proof from the college that they attended.

Phone calls to the school to call off or pick up a student for that day will be deemed as Excused Counts.

Thank you in advance for your adherence to and cooperation with this new procedure.
Musings from the LRC

We have a plethora of great fiction and nonfiction books for students to read after break and during exams.  Our local bookstore, Fundamentals, in downtown Delaware has a huge selection of books & games if you want to gift the gift of literature.

Speaking of holiday gifts, consider purchasing a Chromebook or laptop for your student to use each day as our supplies are dwindling.  Students with long-term black Dell Chromebooks MUST bring their technology to the library Dec 14th through 20th to either renew it for another quarter or return if it is no longer being used.   All 24-hour Chromebooks must be returned by Dec 19th.
