November, a Month of Being Thankful...
Greetings!

Every day is Thanksgiving here at Habitat for Humanity of Coastal Fairfield County and we never miss an opportunity to share our gratitude with those who make it possible for us to build homes and bright futures for families in need.

It is my pleasure to begin almost every morning expressing thanks to the volunteers who come out to help us build. It is their time, energy and enthusiasm that enables Habitat to build simple, quality homes and to sell them at a cost that is affordable for our hard working local families. It’s so important for our volunteers to know how appreciated they are as we truly couldn’t exist without them.

I devote another portion of every day thanking contributors. I find it remarkable that so many people give so willingly and generously to help others that they will probably never meet. Since our homeowners don’t often get the chance to thank our donors themselves, it’s my pleasure to do it for them. I make it a point to hand sign every “thank you” letter that comes out of our office – because it is important for our donors to know that our thanks come from the heart.

When we present a family with the keys to a brand new house, they share their own sincere expressions of gratitude. Homeownership is a dream come true and their appreciation for all those who made it possible is heartwarming. But the truth is that we are equally grateful to them. The opportunity to partner with a hard working local family striving to improve their lives and the community we share is a gift – and the best way for them to demonstrate their gratitude is to be a success.

William Arthur Ward said, “Feeling gratitude and not expressing it is like wrapping a present and not giving it.” May your holidays be filled with the satisfaction of gratitude and the warmth that comes from sharing your thanks.

Sincerely,
    Stuart D. Adelberg

Four Families Get the Keys to their New Homes!

This past month we held two Double Dedication Ceremonies! Edybeth Rentas and Lissette DelMoral are now neighbors on Newfield Street. And Desiree Cedano and her husband Ruben Ayala have moved into their home next door to Zulay Villalva on Jefferson Street.

"All of the families are happy to have another Habitat homeowner living so close as they begin to navigate the responsibilities of home ownership," said Iris Cordero Taylor, Director of Family Services at Habitat CFC. "By building multiple homes on the same block we are helping strengthen the community."

Full House at Aitoro!

We had another great Women Build event earlier this month. It was our 9 th Annual Gourmet Tasting & Fundraiser and it keeps growing! This year we had more culinary hosts and raised more funds than ever before.

Attendees from all over Fairfield County enjoyed culinary samplings in Aitoro’s state-of-the-art kitchens in Norwalk.

Thank you to our sponsors, culinary hosts, and contributors for making our event a success- we will be able to begin building our 14th Women Build home in 2018! Lastly, a big thank you to our Women Build Committee for all of their hard work..

Meet our New AmeriCorps

Habitat CFC has had the privilege to work with a number of individuals from AmeriCorps over the years. Participants work at Habitat CFC for 10-12 months focusing on a department or project(s).

Nicholas Knebel (top photo), AmeriCorps Direct, Construction Crew Leader, grew up in Darien and has worked/volunteered for a number of local non-profits. He attended Wake Forest University as well as an Outward Bound 72-day course which included volunteering for Habitat for Humanity in Florida. Through this experience, he realized he wanted to work for Habitat for Humanity on a construction team.

Colton Shaheen (bottom photo), Volunteer Services Development coordinator, attended Towson University. Upon graduation, he commissioned into the U.S. Army in order to serve as an aviation officer. He was discharged in September 2017 and elected to continue his public service as an AmeriCorps VISTA. Colton is excited to help build our Women Build, Youth United and Habitat for Heroes programs.
