CLASS NOTES
TED Talks
TED Talks
High school students studying Human Geography recently prepared their own TED Talks presentation about Jared Diamond's "Guns, Germs, and Steel," and decided if geography was the main determining factor in a nation's prosperity, power, and technological advancement. In addition, they researched how the plant or animal they chose impacted U.S. advancement, and eventually helped the U.S. become a world power.

Students also learned public speaking etiquette and best practices.

TED Talks is a nonpartisan nonprofit devoted to spreading ideas, usually in the form of short, powerful talks. TED began in 1984 as a conference where Technology, Entertainment and Design converged, and today covers almost all topics - from science, to business, to global issues - in more than 110 languages.

Fifth graders put higher level reading and thinking skills to use in November as they worked to solve the mystery of who tried to kidnap Tom Turkey from Mr. McDonald's Farm. The young gumshoes used making inferences skills, drawing conclusions, predicting and reading for details to solve the mystery. Fifth graders will visit another mystery to work on these reading skills just before Christmas.

STEWARDSHIP SPOTLIGHT
Feeding the Valley
During the month of November there were two after-school opportunities for St. Anne-Pacelli High School students and faculty to volunteer at Feeding the Valley Food Bank. Feeding the Valley serves as a centralized source for receiving and distributing donated food, fresh produce and grocery products from national and local retail donors as well as seasonal produce from local providers. Our partner in education St. Anne Community Outreach is one of the recipients of their products. The Viking group made up a formidable assembly line, putting together over 150 boxes of food in just over an hour during each visit. Each box helps feed a needy family for a month.
