MSP Produces Video on Active Shooter Response

The Maryland State Police (MSP) Education and Training Division has produced a series of three videos to help educate civilians on how to respond to active shooter events. The videos are now available as a training exercise for State of Maryland employees in Executive Branch agencies via The Hub, the State's intranet platform for its employees.

The Civilian Response to Active Shooter Events (CRASE) training video arms citizens with the
information they need to know to protect themselves and others in the crucial first three
minutes before first responders arrive.

The training is based on Texas State University's Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT) program. Created in 2002, ALERRT teaches civilians to "Avoid, Deny, Defend" in an active shooter incident. In 2013, the FBI named ALERRT the National Standard in Active Shooter Response Training.

Lt. Trent Lebo, of the Maryland State Police Education and Training Division, is available to
answer questions on active shooter preparedness at [email protected]. For questions on the training course videos, contact Michael New, Statewide LMS Manager, Office of Personnel Services and Benefits, Department of Budget and Management, at [email protected] or call 410-767-9712.

To access the course on the Hub:
  1. Access the Hub;
  2. Locate the course; the course name is MDTRN - Maryland State Police Active Shooter "CRASE" Curriculum.
  3. Click on "Browse for Training" (yellow link block);
  4. Search for "Active Shooter" or "CRASE."
  5. Once the course is located, you can open and play the three course videos in order in the curriculum player.

  Safety Flicks Gets a Makeover

IWIF's popular online safety video training service, Safety Flicks, has received a fresh new look. "There is a new platform for the streaming video service, and the landing page is now sleeker and more savvy," according to Kristin Klein, SERMA Risk Management Committee chair.

Although it is transparent to the State agencies, the streaming video service is now provided by iTrain Station (not WUMBUS). Most of the previous titles are still available, and a number of additional titles have been added, including some new "free" content, which consists mainly of OSHA titles. Many of the streaming videos are available in English as well as Spanish, and quizzes are available at the end of the trainings, allowing viewers the opportunity to test themselves on the topics.

An unlimited number of streaming videos may be viewed by State agencies. The only
stipulation is that users must have an eServices account with us (and an associated User Name and Password) in order to take advantage of this very convenient online training opportunity. For more information, go to the Safety Flicks page on our website or contact your SERMA Risk Management Consultant.
