Mid-Atlantic Capital Cardiology Symposium

Four GW cardiology fellows presented their original research results at the Mid-Atlantic Capital Cardiology Symposium hosted by the Mid-Atlantic Chapters of the American College of Cardiology.

Dr. Kaitlin Baron was a finalist for the Capital Cardiology Young Investigator Award and winner of Best Research Poster "Coronary Artery Disease Burden in the 21st Century Adults by Coronary CTA: Is Age 50 the Magic Number?" Using sophisticated Cardiac CT imaging Dr. Baron and her mentor, Dr. Andrew Choi, were able to identify early onset coronary artery disease in young adults.
Dr. Andrew Bradley won a best poster award for his project, "Cardiovascular Magnetic Resonance in the Evaluation of Fibrofatty Infiltration for Arrhythmogenic Right Ventricular Dysplasia/Cardiomyopathy." This is a rare, but potentially fatal, heart rhythm disorder.
Dr. James McCaffrey presented "The Impact of Esophageal Proximity to Pulmonary Veins during Cryoablation on Esophageal Temperature Recordings."
Dr. Talal Alzahrani presented two posters; "Statin Use and the Risk of Cardiovascular Implantable Electronic Device Infection: A Cohort Study in a Veteran Population" and "Association between Electronic Cigarette Use and Myocardial Infarction: Results from the 2014 and 2016 National Health Interviews Surveys."

Dr. Cynthia Tracy, Associate Director of GW Division of Cardiology led a debate discussion on "Left Atrium Appendage Occlusion is Preferred over Oral Anticoagulation for Atrial Fibrillation Stroke Prevention."

Interdisciplinary Lecture Series

Featuring Dr. William Dietz

Dr. William Dietz, Director of Sumner M. Redstone Global Center for Prevention and Wellness Professor, Milken Institute School of Public Health at The George Washington University, delivered "Obesity and Cardiovascular Disease" as part of the Bloedorn Cardiology Interdisciplinary Lecture Series. Supported by the Walter A. Bloedorn Foundation, this educational series creates a forum to better integrate colleagues across GW by engaging faculty and trainees from multiple medical specialties.

Frontiers in Medicine: "Surgery without a Knife"

GW's Frontiers in Medicine

Drs. Jonathan Reiner and Cynthia Tracy were the featured speakers at the GW's Frontiers in Medicine patient education series speaking on "Cardiac Surgery without a Knife." Dr. Reiner described the new catheter-based approaches to heart valve replacement and repair. Dr. Tracy reviewed new procedures for patients with atrial fibrillation that can protect against stroke without the need for blood thinners.

GW Cardiology Faculty Participate in American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions 2017

Our GW cardiology faculty, fellows, and students participated in several sessions at the 2017 American Heart Association's Scientific Sessions in Anaheim, California. This international meeting attracts nearly 18,000 attendees from more than 100 countries to participate in lectures and discussions about advances in heart disease.

GW senior medical student, Aparna Sajja, was the winner of the American Association of Cardiologists of Indian Origin Young Investigator Award. She gave a featured research presentation "Small Dense High-and Low-Density Lipoprotein Particle Number Relates to Coronary Plaque Burden Independent of Traditional Cardiovascular Risk Factors in Psoriasis."
Dr. William Borden serves as Vice-Chair for the Quality of Care and Outcomes Research Council leadership meeting and presented a talk "The Most Important Cardiovascular Health Policy Studies of the Past Year."
Dr. Talal Alzahrani, cardiology fellow, presented "Statin Use and the Risk of CIED Infection: A Cohort Study in a Veteran Population."
Dr. Cynthia Tracy was invited presenter for a cardiovascular seminar on Ambulatory ECG Monitoring: Lots of Options to Choose From and presented "The Latest and Greatest in Device Technology."
