You Are Here
Online shopping has virtually killed off a cultural icon of my childhood - the mall. Once upon a time, the mall was the place to be and be seen. We played video games in the arcade, we ate at the food court, and we annoyed the mall cops. In Nashville, where I was born and raised, we had several malls to choose from, each with their own character and clientele. But what every mall had in common then, and even now, is the directory sign. You know what I’m talking about; that three-sided kiosk with advertising on two sides and a giant map of the mall on the third. To figure out where you need to go, you stand in front of that glowing panel and begin looking for the most important part, the “You Are Here” dot. Instead, you could start by looking for your destination, but seeing that Yankee Candle is on the second floor next to Sunglass Hut doesn’t help you until you know where you’re standing. What is true in the mall, is also true in life; the key to getting where we need to go is first understanding where we are.

I spend a fair amount of time in counseling conversations. Most often these are with adults, but whether the conversation is with someone young or old, I can predict whether it will be successful or not based on one thing - that person’s ability to accept the “you are here” dot on the map of their life. When we’ve done or said something we regret, when someone has let us down, when we’ve lost a job or a friendship or a marriage, the hardest thing is often just acknowledging, “this is my life right now.” Instead, we blame others, deny our circumstances, or get angry with God. Blame and denial waste time and being angry with God will never help us get from where we are to where we want to be. The key to changing our circumstance begins with an honest view of reality - coming to grips with that "you are here” dot. Until we’ve done that, we can’t move forward with faith that a new circumstance is possible.

Jesus said we’d have trouble in this world ( John 16:33 ), but he also said that He came so that we might have abundant life ( John 10:10 ). Regardless of age or circumstance, we all have the power to change our life for the better with God’s simple three-step plan: acknowledge where we are, believe that He has something better, and take a faithful step in that direction. The problem is that most of us stop after step two and then become frustrated when nothing seems to change. God is waiting to lift us out of frustration and into freedom, but we have to begin moving in that direction. Let’s find our “dot” this week and get moving toward a new life in Him. The kingdom of God is at hand!

Blessings,
Jim R. Callis

Georgia GOAL Update
We've done it! Thanks to you, we've surpassed last year's number of GOAL tax credit applications with an MBCA designation. That means we are on our way to helping more deserving students and their families receive tuition assistance. Please take action today and join the 87 donors who have already committed to helping us maximize our available financial aid.

You will receive a 100% credit for your contribution when you file your Georgia income taxes. In other words, the state of Georgia is allowing you to "spend" some of the taxes you must pay anyway in order to provide funds for deserving students to attend MBCA.

You can now do this from your phone! Visit the new, mobile-friendly Georgia GOAL website at goalscholarship.org and complete the 2018 Tax Credit Application. It takes less than two minutes and nothing further is required until GOAL contacts you for your payment in March of 2018. You will claim the 100% credit in 2019, at the time you file your 2018 tax return.

This program is so popular that you will very likely only be approved for about half of what you intend to contribute. The cap on these credits has been exceeded for the last three years, which is why your participation is so important. If MBCA does not receive these funds, another Georgia private school will!

Halloween Candy Overload!
A message from Mrs. Kelly….
A good friend of mine runs Operation Homefront, an organization dedicated to helping the families of Georgia soldiers currently deployed overseas. Supporting the troops is a cause near and dear to my heart, so I help her whenever I can.

One of the things she's in need of at this time of year is candy. Not only will she send hard candies oversees to the troops, but she will put together goodie bags for the holidays for the children here at home. To help support her effort, I'm happy to accept the Halloween candy you would prefer your children not eat. I know that my kids loved to trick or treat, but I only let them have one piece of candy a day - which meant I always had a whole lot of extra candy that mostly ended up in the garbage. If you find yourself in similar circumstances, please feel free to send it in with the students to Room 223, and I will make sure it gets to the right place! Candy collection runs until Monday, November 13 . Thank you for helping support our troops.

Second Grade
A Visit By MBCA Leaders
Second Grade has been studying Government and our leaders. Mrs. Black’s class visited two of our very own MBCA leaders, Mr. Callis, our Head of School, and Mrs. Lovett, our Lower School Principal. They shared with us what it is like to be a leader at MBCA and what some of their job responsibilities are. The students loved learning about their jobs and seeing all that is involved in being a leader.
Fourth Grade
Northwest Passage
Fourth graders recently showed their creative sides while wrapping up a study of the Northwest Passage. Explorers tried to find a faster route to Asia during the 1500 and 1600’s. Enjoy these commercials and talk shows written by, produced, and starring the fabulous fourth graders of MBCA!
100% Participation Treat
Fourth graders enjoyed a dress day down and a special treat for having 100% participation in the Annual Fund fun. Thank you to all the parents for making our goal.
Decimal Quiz
Fourth grade is also learning about place value in decimals. Can you read the number these good looking fourth graders are holding up?

Spoiler alert: it’s 1.111.
Fifth Grade
Preamble
As part of their Government studies, fifth grade students all learned the Preamble to the Constitution and had to recite it from memory. One study tool was to use the Schoolhouse Rocks version of the song to learn it. Molly Dierker used her God-given singing talent to really rock it!
Christmas in the Caribbean
Fifth graders went international again, as they Skyped with our MBCA family, the Parsons! They are currently in Italy while they wait on their boat to be repaired, and they got to learn about how they conduct school on the boat, what their favorite city to visit has been, and what kinds of delicious foods they are enjoying on their trip through the Mediterranean! It was wonderful to see the whole family and learn about lemon crepes in Paris and pasta in Italy. They’ve seen some beautiful landmarks, including the ruins of Pompeii and cathedrals throughout Europe. It’s been great to keep up with their travels when Nancy Claire emails us, and it was a joy to see them and talk with them live last week! They look forward to Skyping with them again around the holidays to see how Christmas in the Caribbean looks!
Sixth Grade
Literature Unit Culminating Activity

Seventh Grade
A Midsummer Night's Dream
Seventh grade Literature students in Mrs. Giles class and Ms. Lynn's class made sets and costumes for their reading of  A Midsummer Night's Dream.
Upper School
"Free Art Movement"
Last Friday, Upper School art students ventured downtown for the day to walk the Atlanta Beltline and participate in the ever-growing "Free Street Art Movement”! Before the field trip, students created “statement stones” to give away or leave behind on the Beltline for others to enjoy. On the trip, students also completed an artwork scavenger hunt, photographed murals, interacted with sculptures, and ended the day with lunch at Ponce City Market. It was an inspirational experience for all!
