NASW opposes Tax Cuts and Jobs Act
You've probably read that Senate Republicans have proposed a bill to cut taxes. We wish that the truth were so simple.
In order to fund a tax cut that would go mostly to the wealthy and businesses, the proposed legislation would cut programs that help single mothers, children, low-income families and the elderly. And the Senate is rushing this bill to a vote so people don't have time to understand its implications.
The economic inequities created by this bill exacerbate the existing income disparities between the rich and poor. NASW and NASW-NJ call upon the Senate to reject this bill in favor of an approach that reduces extreme economic inequality when reforming our tax system.

Private Practitioners: Did You Receive a Negative PQRS Payment Adjustment Letter for 2018?
Last Day to File a Request for an Informal Review is December 1
The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) currently is contacting clinical social workers who are Medicare Part B providers who will be receiving a 2018 Physician Quality Reporting System (PQRS) negative payment adjustment beginning January 1, 2018. The 2018 penalty is two percent. If you believe you received a negative payment adjustment letter in error, NASW encourages you to file a request for an informal review by the deadline, December 1, 2017.

Medicare's Newest Quality Reporting Program: MACRA
New practice perspectives, "Preparing for Medicare's Newest Quality Program for Reporting Measures: MACRA": MACRA is CMS' new Quality Payment Program which is replacing PQRS. Beginning in 2019, clinical social workers who are Medicare providers will have three options to participate in MACRA: low volume threshold, virtual groups, and individual or group reporting. In 2018, clinical social workers may participate in MACRA to practice reporting measures, but will not receive credit for doing so.

Open Enrollment for the ACA is NOW!
November 1st - December 15th
The open enrollment period for the health insurance marketplace is significantly shorter this year - November 1 to December 15, 2017 (it's normally three months). The Trump Administration has also cut funding for advertising and enrollment assistance. Social workers should share this enrollment information with clients, families, friends and communities to bring awareness to the narrow enrollment window.

NASW Statement on International Violence Against Women Act
Association urges Congress to quickly pass legislation to empower women, girls, communities and nations to end violence.
NASW
has issued a statement to welcome the introduction of the International Violence Against Women Act (IVAWA) in the Senate. Along with other members of the Coalition to End Violence Against Women and Girls Globally, NASW urges Congress to pass this legislation quickly.

Clinical Social Workers Be Aware: New Claim Change Coming
The Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) is taking steps to remove Social Security numbers from Medicare cards. Between April 2018 and April 2019, CMS will issue new Medicare cards to all beneficiaries. Each card will include a new unique, randomly assigned number called a Medicare Beneficiary Identifier (MBI). Beginning April 2018, clinical social workers who are Medicare providers in private practice will need to update their patient files to include the new MBI number and use it on the CMS-1500 form when submitting a claim. In addition, other systems may need to be updated to accept the new MBI format.
