On 50 scenic acres in Wellandport, Ontario, you'll find  Blazing Colours Farm, an equestrian centre and breeding facility with horses that are sought after for their high quality and unique blazing colours.

April Wayenberg started it all 15 years ago, and in that time, has built quite a name for herself in the equestrian world, bringing clients from around the world to Niagara Region. April has at least one of her horses in almost every province and state, and recently sold four horses to clients in Dubai.

We connected with April to learn more about her lifelong dream to open an equestrian farm, and the blazing success she has built for herself. Read April's story on our blog.
On November 18th, we continued our celebrations of Canada 150 Farm Families in the Region of Peel. Another  exciting event brought together 37 families who were honoured for farming in the region for 150 years or more.

Thank you to the Caledon Enterprise for covering the event; you can read their article and see a few photos from the evening here.

French's is earning a lot of praise amongst Canadians as of late, now that their ketchup made from Canadian tomatoes is also being manufactured in the country, deeming it Canada's " most patriotic condiment.

French's ketchup has always been made with Canadian tomatoes, but it used to be processed in an Ohio plant, until French's partnered with Select Food Products Ltd. The Select Food production facility in North York is now producing all of the company's ketchup sold in Canada, pumping out 5,000 litres of French's ketchup every hour, equalling 250 bottles every minute. Read more here.

Congratulations to the  Holland Marsh Growers' Association, who received a  Healthy Water Award from the Lake Simcoe Region Conservation Authority at their 36th annual Conservation Awards.

The project resulted in important research and discoveries related to wash water systems and de-dirting equipment, revealing effective treatment methods and technologies that are reducing risks to water quality in Lake Simcoe and Georgian Bay.

"Both farmers and processing plants worked together to keeps phosphorous where it belongs - out on the field, not in the lakes," Jody Mott, HMGA Executive Director, tells us. Learn more on our blog.

Earlier this month, the Region of Peel endorsed a comprehensive Food Charter, designed to lead a collective effort in achieving a just, equitable food system for the area and its residents.

The Charter is a living document developed through significant input from the community, and comes as a response to the growing concern around food insecurity in the region and across the country.

Last month, the Golden Horseshoe Food and Farming Alliance held a Soil Health Workshop for TRCA staff and farmers at Black Creek Community Farm in Toronto.

Attendees participated in soil texture exercises and  listened to an informative presentation from  Ian McDonald , Applied Research Coordinator for OMAFRA's Field Crops Unit.

At the centre of the morning discussion was the question, how do you efficiently grow and be productive? Read more on our blog.

The Golden Horseshoe Food and Farming Alliance, in partnership with the Economic Developers Council of Ontario, was successful in a joint submission to Ontario's  Rural Economic Development (RED) program , enabling us to continue to develop and expand our asset mapping tool box with new and enhanced tools.

Did you know this Saturday, December 2, is National Christmas Tree Day?

With the holiday season upon us, we're resurfacing a blog post from last year as a friendly reminder that hundreds of Christmas Tree Farms across Ontario offer the opportunity to harvest an authentic, aromatic tree, while also supporting local farmers, the environment and the economy. Think local for your tree this year, and have a happy National Christmas Tree Day!
