We Want to Highlight You!
We are looking to highlight your business in our weekly newsletters!  If you would like your business in our weekly newsletters, please email  [email protected]

Today, I met with our Incoming Board Chair, Kristen Steinke, Government Affairs Chair, Tom Stamos and Economic Development Chair, Matt Pound. They are dedicated to bringing the best information and resources to our members in 2018 and are already lining up the programs and presenters.

Our discussion sparked a curiosity...

Governor Brown vetoed 118 of the 977 bills by the end of the legislative period for 2017, for a grand total of 859 new bills. This number amazes me. So I was curious to see how many bills our neighboring state legislators enacted in 2017. Unfortunately, there is not a neat chart created by an eager college student with the same quirky curiosity, so I don't have a clear number for you, but the numbers are equally as high.  In comparison, Utah passed 43 bills.

The real question is, how do these bills affect your business?

In order to answer your questions and give you the tools to be in compliance, in January and February, our committees will bring in the experts to review Labor and Tax laws.

Of course, many of you are already budgeting for the minimum wage increase in 2018.

Sincerely,

Rorie Johnston

Winter Energy-Saving Tips to Reduce Business Energy Costs

There are a variety of ways you can reduce costs in your business when it comes to energy. By  assessing the needs of your employees and your customers, you'll be able to make a plan that  helps you cut costs where you need it the most.

1. Don't heat what you don't use. This may seem obvious but it's easy to oversee. Only heat
the rooms and areas of the building which are in use every day. Rooms with low usage
should have their heating turned down or off until they are in use. You can also keep
temperatures low in hallways as they are not used for more than a couple of minutes at a
time.
2. Motivate and involve staff. Encourage employees to take part in brainstorming sessions.
Employees can be delegated responsibility to offer their own innovative ideas to cut down
on energy costs. Having an open dialogue about the things that could be changed about
energy usage in your business is very important. This will allow you to create efficient work
culture in your company.
3. Schedule an energy audit for your facility. SDG&E offers free energy assessments to help
ensure you are using energy efficiently. Learn more at sdge.com/BES to find out if areas
can be identified to trim down your energy needs.
4. Look out for small drafts that may leak air. Small drafts can result in businesses losing
sometimes substantial portions of their heating and cooling costs. Proper air sealing of the
work environment can eliminate those drafts.
5. Keep control of your heating. Keeping your office temperature one degree down during
winters can reduce the power it uses by up to 10%. Consider purchasing a smart
thermostat, too.
By considering these steps, you could see changes in your energy bill. People often underestimate
the little things they do at work, so promoting awareness about energy issues is very important.
Not only will you be lowering your energy bill, you'll also be promoting a healthy environment
within your own workplace. For more ideas on how to save energy in your business, visit

Every year since 1998, the Escondido Police Department has hosted an annual Christmas party to give kids who have been the victims of abuse, neglect, and violent crime a Christmas they might not otherwise get to experience. This year the party will be held on Thursday, December 7, 2017. The event will include food, a magic show, face painting, a visit with Santa Claus, and every child in attendance will receive gifts. We are asking for the community's help to make this Christmas a little bit brighter for these kids by donating a new, unwrapped toy for a boy or girl ages newborn to 18 years old.

All locations will be collecting gifts until Friday, December 1 st , 2017.

The Escondido Police Department is proud to announce that it will be participating in the 27th annual Law Enforcement Teddy Bear Drive to benefit Rady Children's Hospital.  The Escondido Police Department is asking for assistance with donations of new huggable sized stuffed animals.  The collection drive will begin Monday, November 21st and will continue through Monday, December 4th.  Collection boxes will be located in the front lobby of the Escondido Police Department located at 1163 N Centre City Pkwy as well as the Escondido Federal Credit Union located at 201 N Broadway.  Donations are welcomed during normal operating business hours.  It is the mission of the San Diego County Law Enforcement Agencies involved with this worthwhile cause to provide a stuffed animal for comfort to each and every child that is admitted to Children's Hospital.
