Dear Friends of Safe Harbor Lab Rescue,

We have rescued over 260 Labs this year and still have a busy month ahead of us! Safe Harbor's committed role in the guardianship and level of care for our rescued Labs sets us apart and gives us great pride. Every Lab is vaccinated, microchipped, spayed/neutered, heartworm tested and their health needs, simple or complex, are addressed by our top-notch vet partners; each is lovingly fostered, allowing us to get to know them so we can find just the right forever home.

This is a huge undertaking for our all-volunteer rescue. Imagine the vet bills for all those sweet Labs, many of whom are neglected, hurting, sick or been poorly cared for! It's no wonder medical costs make up the vast majority of our expenses.

Please join us in providing thorough, quality care for our rescued Labs by including Safe Harbor, a 501(c)3 public charity, in your year-end giving plans. Adoption fees do not cover the costs of readying Labs for their forever homes. We rely on the generosity of donors to help bridge the gap. Often an employer will match your gift.

Together what a difference we can make for these wonderful Labs who truly deserve a second chance.

Best Wishes for a Happy Holiday Season!

Happy Holidays and Every Day for "Benny"
Safe Harbor's volunteers and supporters have given young Benny a pretty special gift!

Benny was weaving alongside a highway when he was picked up by the Houston SPCA's injured stray animal ambulance. His eyes were tightly squeezed closed, draining, and very painful. Days passed and no one came to claim Benny, a gentle smaller Lab ready with kisses and an ever-wagging tail, in spite of his misery. The shelter staff worried about his fate as a blind dog. Through a rescue partner, they found out about Safe Harbor and our work with Labs in need of medical care. We were eager to help! The challenge: Benny was 1,000 miles away in Houston and needed to get to us as soon as possible for treatment for his painful eyes.

Word went out to our Transport Team on a Thursday: Could anyone help with this seemingly impossible request? Within hours, a number of our volunteers offered to go get Benny! On Saturday evening Patsy J. and her sister flew to Houston, rented a car, and drove all day and night to get Benny to Denver. They arrived in the wee hours of Monday morning. A few hours later, Dr. Dugan at Eye Specialists for Animals  examined Benny. His eyes were extremely swollen, red and painful; a number of medications were prescribed. The right eye is likely irreversibly blind due to a thick inoperable cataract, but there is a bit of vision in the left.

Four days later Benny was able to open his eyes! At the follow-up appointment Dr. Dugan was impressed with how the swelling had subsided and how much more comfortable Benny felt. Benny is comfortably recovering in his medical foster home. The cause of his eye issues is still an open question that will be addressed in future visits with additional diagnostics.

Now the holidays and "ever-after" are looking pretty bright for one very special little Lab named Benny, who got a second chance for a wonderful life . Many thanks to Safe Harbor's amazing volunteers, donors and vets who made this possible!

Safe Harbor Lab Rescue is honored to again participate in  Colorado Gives Day  on Tuesday, December 5th. We are committed to improving the lives of our rescued Labs, many of whom come to us neglected, injured or ill. Stellar Elementary "Girls on the Run" Shower the Labs with Gifts and Love
Thoughtful girls in the 3 rd - 5th grades at Stellar Elementary in Thornton organized a school-wide drive to collect supplies for our foster Labs. This exceptional group participates in the after-school program "Girls on the Run"  that helps girls develop positive emotional, social, mental and physical skills. It also explores the importance of teamwork, healthy relationships, and how they can positively connect with and shape the world. They certainly have worked together beautifully to make a positive difference for our rescued Labs!
Dear Labby: To Do's to Keep the Holidays Happy
Dear Labby is ready to offer advice on all matters "Labby" from both four and two-legged folks.

Dear Gentle Reader,

Photo courtesy of Kateri Nelson - all rights reserved
We Labs are the original party animals and LOVE this festive time of year! It can get a little overwhelming though, and it sure seems like there are tons of Don't Do's:
  • Don't eat chocolate, turkey bones and food wrappers.
  • Don't chew on electrical cords or snag stuff off the tree's lower branches.
  • Don't send burning candles flying off the coffee table with your wagging tail.
  • Don't eat wrapping paper, ribbon, tinsel or assorted holiday plants like mistletoe and poinsettias.
  • Don't tinkle on the tree . . . the list goes on longer than a tennis ball thrown into the next county!
So, Gentle Reader, I thought I'd focus on the positive and provide some TO DO's  to share with your family:
  • Keep to our regular routine; it's comforting.
  • Provide us with a quiet, safe place to go when company comes over and we need a break.
  • Keep to our regular diet no matter how much we beg. Be strong!
  •  Keep the lid on the trash can.
  • Let guests know what we're allowed and not allowed to do.

Love, Labby

Do  live  in  the  moment  and  be  happy   and  celebrate !

Volunteer Spotlight: Janis Hoskinson
Janis Hoskinson and her husband, Dave, brought home their first lab in 2000 and haven't looked back since.  In fact, they learned about Safe Harbor way back in 2004 when they adopted Ouzo from the organization. After Ouzo sadly passed away in 2016, Janis began volunteering with Safe Harbor.  Every home needs a Lab, and Janis and Dave are currently happy dog parents to Poco (pictured with Ouzo) who they adopted in 2013.

Despite having a busy work schedule that keeps her on the road, Janis still finds time to volunteer for Safe Harbor.  She currently works on the applications team where she loves hearing the glowing reports that the references say about the applicants.  Janis writes that, "It warms my heart to know that one of the rescue doggies might find their forever home soon."  She also volunteers on the transport team, but is limited in the number of transports she can help with due to the location of her job.

Thank you Janis!
