The Marriage Rate Remains Stable,
The Divorce Rate Continues to Decline in 2016

Marriage and divorce rates have shifted in different ways over the past forty-five years. Between 1970 and 2010, the marriage rate declined from about 77 marriages per 1,000 unmarried women over the age of 14 to slightly over 30. Since 2010, the marriage rate has remained stable, and in 2016, about 32 women aged 15 and older married for every 1,000 unmarried women. The divorce rate has been more stable throughout the period between 1970 and 2016, although the rate has steadily declined over the past four years. In 2016, there were slightly less than 17 divorces per 1,000 married women aged 15 and older, the lowest rate since 1979.
