Update: Local Elections Campaign Finance
A bill to amend the
Local Elections Campaign Financing Act moved to third reading in the legislature last week. UBCM discussed the proposed legislation with Municipal Affairs and Housing Minister Selina Robinson at its Executive meeting earlier this month to express concerns about a proposed $1200.00 contribution limit for candidates who self-finance their campaigns.

National Housing Strategy Highlights
The federal government has released its National Housing Strategy (NHS), which will guide the delivery of approximately $40 billion in funding over 10 years. Key elements of the strategy include a National Housing Co-Investment Fund, a new rental benefit, community housing initiatives, and an expanded homelessness program.

Federal Gas Tax Fund Report
Since 2005, the Federal Gas Tax Fund has provided $1.4 billion to 3,729 infrastructure and capacity building projects in B.C. communities. UBCM's report on expenditures for the 2016 program year is now available. Along with aggregate comparisons of 2014-2016 reporting data, the report provides a complete list of the 896 projects under way during reporting period.

Highlights of the November Executive Meeting
UBCM Executive members met for their quarterly board and committee meetings on November 16-17, 2017. Seven committees met to confirm work plans; Executive members adopted their goals and priorities; an orientation session was held and a delegation was received from the Honourable Selina Robinson, Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing.

Gas Tax Outcomes Reporting Deadline
Local governments are required to update their Performance Measurement reporting by December 15, 2017. This information is required to complete requirements under the renewed Gas Tax Agreement.
