Rector's Reflections

Trusting in God, Trusting with God

Human beings are relational creatures. We are created to be in relationship with one another and with God, and this is why Kay and I are travelling to the Holy Land. Our hope is to meet and experience the people God has gathered as the Church in this time, in that place. Our hope is to experience God in and through the people and places we connect to in relationship.

No one, no matter how independent or disconnected they may feel they are, functions completely outside the context of relationships. From the moment we are born we are thrust into relationship with people around us-the people who delivered us, the people who will be taking care of us in a hospital nursery, our family, and God. When we enter this world we do so forming relationships right from the start.

Relationships, healthy relationships, require a lot of work and care to continue. In particular, relationships require trust to grow and become mature. Relationships rooted in trust can bring out the best in us. Relationships rooted in anything else can bring out the worst.

This Sunday's readings offer the chance to consider the trust required in the relationship between God and God's people. Moreover, we are invited to give thought to the consequences of replacing trust with something else: hubris stemming from trust in one's identity or work (in Amos), or hubris stemming from trust in others to sustain us rather than God (in Matthew). Paul reminds us that our relationship with God is cause for joy, even in the midst of sorrow, since we believe (trust) God's promise of eternal life through the living Lord Jesus. [Sundays and Seasons, 2017]

Holding you in prayer as we journey,
Bill +

P.S. Kay and I leave will be on pilgrimage with a group visiting the Church in Jordan and the Holy Land much of November. We will be back in worship for Christ the King Sunday, November 26th. Should you have a pastoral emergency, please contact Deb in the church office or Don Holm our Senior Warden.

This week we are staying at a Christian Guest House on the grounds of Augusta Victoria Hospital on the Mount of Olives (pictured above) in East Jerusalem.

Audit Team Volunteers Needed

The Lakes Region Convocation of the Episcopal Church of New Hampshire is seeking volunteers from each parish to be willing to participate on audit teams to assist one another. The Diocese requires annual audits and staff typically conduct parish audits every three years. Please speak with Art Slocum or Pastor Bill if you would like to serve or have questions.

The Rev. Jane Van Zandt, Celebrant
The above photo of Rev. Jane VanZandt was taken on Sunday, January 15th. Rev. Van Zandt will serve as All Saints Celebrant on Nov. 12th and 19th.

Listening Devices Available

We have recently installed an "assisted listening system" for the sanctuary.

If you would like to try it out, let Don Johnson, Bill Meyer or Ralph Simons know and they will show you how it works. It is available now with ear buds, but will soon be available with ear phones. You may also bring your own ear buds or ear phones and just plug into the small receiver provided. It is not blue tooth enabled.

Respectfully submitted,
Ralph Simons

Rev. Bill and Kay Petersen 's Pilgrimage to the  Holy Land

The photos and captions of Kay and Rev. Bill Petersen's trip to the Holy Land were copied from the All Saints Facebook Page.

Pastor Bill and Kay are enjoying their pilgrimage to visit Christians in Jordan and the Holy Land. Today's highlights included the Dome of the Rock on Temple Mount, the Wailing Wall, a full day in the old city of Jerusalem including climbing the tower at Church of the Redeemer with its amazing views.

The caption in the above photo from Rev. Petersen states, "A breezy but beautiful day at the Dome of the Rock."

The caption to the photo shown below states, " The tower at Church of the Redeemer which is higher than the Dome of the Rock."

The caption from Rev. Petersen to the above photo states, " The view from the tower at the Church of the Redeemer. The Mount of Olives is in the distance. The tower in the upper left is the LWF campus home of Augusta Victoria Hospital, Ascension Church and the Victoria Guesthouse (where the pilgrimage group is staying)."

Lord and Tailor Fashion Show

Warren & Jeannie Muir

The above photo of Warren and Jeannie was taken on August 17th

My wife loves Hallmark movies.  The plots are usually fairly predictable, boy and girl meet,  and stay in touch over the decades even though they are separated by distance and events. Years later their paths again cross.  Both are available, and this time the relationship develops, and a lovely wedding takes place as the credits roll across the screen.

I've gotten a little ahead of the movie, so lets fill in the gaps of Jeannie and Warren's story.
Jeannie was born in Massachusetts and summered with her parents in Wolfeboro near the cabin that Warren's parents built in 1953.

Jeannie taught in Belgium, the Netherlands, and Austria for several years.  A son, Peter, was born in Holland.  They then moved to Bangkok, Thailand where Jeannie again taught for 15 years.  A daughter Anne was born in Thailand.  Eventually Jeannie moved back to New Hampshire and settled in the Wolfeboro area where she taught English until retirement at Kingswood Regional High School.

Warren was born on Staten Island in New York City, and grew up in Pelham, NY.  He received his undergraduate degree from Amherst College and his PhD in Chemistry from Northwestern University in Chicago. After graduation Warren joined the Nixon Administration as a senior staff member in the Executive Office of the President on the Environment.  He kept that position for seven years before moving over to the Environmental Protection Agency.

Warren  founded an environmental non profit research institute and was eventually recruited by the National Academy of Sciences as Executive Director of the Division on Earth and Life Studies. He held that position for fourteen years until he retired.  Warren was blessed with four boys, Doug, Mike, Greg and Dan. Their family became involved hosting youth from the Children Friendship Project of Northern Ireland.  Families would host two teens, one from the Roman Catholic and the other teen from the Protestant sections of Northern Ireland. The teens would live with the host family, become friends and that helped build bridges for peace between the two groups. In addition to hosting teens Warren became President and Chairman of that organization.  After peace came to Northern Ireland, the need for the project ended, and it stopped in 2007.   In 2009,  Warren founded a program for the island of Cyprus based on the model that worked for Northern Ireland.  The Cyprus program brought together teens from the Greek and Turkish Cypriot sides. That program is ongoing today.

Over a period of several years 15 teams of youth from Ireland and five teams from Cyprus  were hosted by the Muir's. Several groups have worshipped at All Saints with Warren & Jeannie.

Warren and Jeannie stayed in touch and married seven years ago.  Today, Warren is involved with immigrants who have arrived in New Hampshire. On Oct. 29th, Warren arranged for a group of recent immigrants to worship at All Saints.  Over the months, immigrants have worshiped at All Saints, received food from our food pantry, clothing from Lord and Tailor, and items from our summer fair.

The final movie scene shows a cabin at sunset on a beautiful lake. The cabin is where the husband spent time as a youth and met his wife who lived a few houses away.  The scene moves inside the cabin where the happily married couple entertain friends over dinner.  The movie scene fades as the dinner is served, and wine glasses are lifted in a toast to the married couple.  This Hollywood Hallmark movie is not fiction as it happened in real life to Warren and Jeannie.

We are grateful for Warren and Jeannie's ministry at All Saints.

One final thought or is it a confession?  I like Hallmark movies, too.

In the photo below Valarie Clarke and Louise Graham help Jeannie with sorting clothing that recently arrived at Lord and Tailor.  The photo was taken on August 17, 2017

In the above photo taken on July 9th, Warren and his good friend Jim Ziglar enjoy conversation prior to Warren introducing Jim.  Jim Ziglar was the Director of the Immigration and Naturalization Service under President George W. Bush. Mr. Ziglar gave an enlightening presentation on the history of immigration in the United States.  He answered several questions pertinent to our present immigration policies during and after his presentation.  Mr. Ziglar received a sustained applause from the large group of parishioners who attended his excellent presentation in the newly renovated Stevens Room.

In the above photo taken on Oct. 29th, Warren Muir introduces immigrants that were brought to All Saints by Amadou Handy. Mr. Hanady works with immigrants in the Manchester school system.

The Music Man

The above photo taken just after the Saturday night performance on Nov. 4th shows All Saints members Phoebe, Scott, and Elliott Giessler.  Phoebe played Ethel Toffelmeier, Scott played Harold Hill who was the Music Man.  Elliott played Winthrop and received loud applause for his singing and acting.

The Music Man will play again this week on Friday, Nov. 10th at 7:30 PM, Sat., Nov. 11th at 7:30 PM, and Sunday, Nov. 12th at 2 PM.
