Get Students Ready to Learn After Brain Breaks
[Source: Your Therapy Source]

Do your students have trouble settling down after brain breaks or recess time?  Maybe you are hesitant to incorporate movement into the school day because you loathe the aftermath of getting the high energy students to return to academic work.  Research indicates that students learn better after movement breaks.  Therapists, teachers, and parents know this but squeezing in brain breaks and recess can be difficult when students have high academic workloads.  To improve student's behaviors

The 'Good Doctor' And Autism: Does ABC Get It Right?
[Source: Disability Scoop]

Hollywood has apparently discovered that a growing segment of the population is on the autism spectrum. The 2017 "Power Rangers" movie and new Netflix series "Atypical," for instance, have main characters with autism.

Perhaps the most high-profile offering is ABC's new show "The Good Doctor." The drama stars Freddie Highmore as Dr. Shaun Murphy, a talented young surgeon with autism and savant syndrome. It shows how he navigates daily life and his work at a prestigious hospital's pediatric surgical unit.

Dyslexia Study Finds Differences in Eye Anatomy
[Source:  Understood]

A new dyslexia study found differences in part of the eye called the fovea. This small region in the back of the eye is packed with red, green and blue light receptors. The study found that the blue light receptors are arranged differently in people who have dyslexia than in people who don't.
The fovea provides much of the information about vision that the optic nerve takes to the brain. And the anatomical differences observed in this study may play a role in eye dominance. (Most people have a dominant eye just like most people have a dominant hand.)

PediaStaff is hiring a Pediatric School Experienced Occupational Therapist in Salinas, California. Salinas promotes itself as the "Salad Bowl of the World" as a tribute to the area's huge farming business.   It has a mix of Modern to Victorian architecture and the downtown area is fiercely proud that there isn't a chain store.  The population is mostly Hispanic, so if you speak Spanish, it's a plus but we appreciate all applicants.

Great PT Activity! Jumping and Balance Path
[Source:  Starfish Therapies]

I know we've talked about a jumping path before but I loved this path that I happened to observe one of my therapists using with her kiddo. It incorporates jumping forward, jumping over, jumping on, jumping off, jumping open, and jumping close. And then, it adds in balance via single leg stance and toe taps!

Pumpkin Balloon Sensory Matching
Editor's Note:  Pumpkins aren't just for Halloween!  Try this great fall activity in your class or clinic!

It's Day 18 of our 31 Days of Pumpkin Activities series.  This activity was a spin off our Heart Sensory Matching Activity that we  did a few years ago.  The orange balloons don't look quite as cute as the heart balloons...but it was still a fun activity!

I didn't make quite as many "sets" of matching balloons this go-round as we ran out of time.  All you need to make this cute activity are balloons, green yarn, a funnel, and the

Using Photos for Language Expression
[Source: Crazy Speech World]

Using photos for therapy isn't exactly a new concept, I have tons of decks of skill cards that use photos!  But, I needed something new that would meet a lot of different goals and came up with this binder.

I first started this project because I needed something more concrete to work on WH words, 'who', 'what', and 'where'.  Once I got that part together, I started to see all of the possibilities.

School Psych Corner: The Pain of Hiding OCD
[The Child Mind Institute]

Dr. Susan Swedo, chief of the Pediatrics and Developmental Neuropsychiatry Branch at the National Institute of Mental Health, discusses how obsessive-compulsive disorder, also known as OCD can be so prevalent and seemingly invisible at the same time. The key is that kids with OCD can hide symptoms during the day, only to explode at home because of the tremendous effort.

In addition to being an occupational therapist, I also run a social skills group called the Meeting House Juniors.  We are a recreational based social skills program for children ages 4-7 years old who have a variety of social struggles.  While our number one goal is to make them feel more socially comfortable and prepare them for the increasingly more demanding social demands they may face as they get older, we also want them to enjoy coming.  This means that we have had to find fun ways to talk to them and work on social skills.

OT/PT Corner: Stability Ball Activities - Stickers
[Source:  Pink Oatmeal]

We love when we can combine fine motor, gross motor, and fun all into one activity and we love stability ball activities.  The stability ball sticker game is an awesome way to combine all of these in one really fun activity.  It can be changed up for the seasons too by using different themed stickers for the seasons or holidays.

Autism Corner: The Most Difficult Trait for Children with Autism
[Source:  My Aspergers Child]

Neurocognitive disorders affect cognitive abilities (e.g., learning, memory, perception, and problem solving). The DSM-5 defines six key domains of cognitive function: social cognition, perceptual-motor function, learning and memory, language, executive function, and complex attention.

Mind-blindness, the opposite of empathy, is a cognitive disorder in which the child with Asperger's (AS) or High-Functioning Autism (HFA) is unable to predict the mental states of
