PROGRAM SPOTLIGHT - PHYSICAL EDUCATION!
Each week, we will be highlighting one of our programs or offering resources for parents to illustrate The Radcliffe Way!

Teaching kids about Physical Fitness is not only good for the body, but the brain as well. Regular exercise has been shown to improve attention span, memory, and learning while reducing stress and the effects of attention-deficit hyperactivity disorder.

Our goal in Physical Education at Radcliffe Creek is to help children develop an active, healthy, and happy lifestyle. InĀtegrating knowledge about what exercise does to our brains helps convince children that exercise is essential to their well-being, therefore increasing the chance that physical activity will beĀcome a permanent part of their daily lives. Once children begin to incorporate fitness into their daily routine regularly, they are more likely to modify other health factors to complement their healthy lifestyles. Physical fitness is broken down into two categories: health-related fitness and skill-related fitness.

Skill-related fitness components deal more with those skills necessary for participation in physical activity, such as power, speed, reaction time, agility, balance, and coordination.

Health-related fitness components, on the other hand, are those attributes that affect a person's overall health on a daily basis. These include muscular endurance/strength, flexibility, and cardiovascular endurance.

In order to teach these components successfully, it's essential to incorporate them in fun ways. Having kids run a mile or perform push-ups and sit-ups may be good for their bodies, but could turn the children off to exercise. Camouflaging physical activity makes fitness exciting, fun and more in keeping with a child's natural way of moving. Once the students become more familiar with the components of fitness, they can recognize and identify the various components not only in P.E. class, but any physical activity they do outside of school.

In the pictures below, Radcliffe students are learning and performing the different components of fitness to try and figure out their strengths and weaknesses. Based on these results, the children will work on coming up with individualized action plans to turn their weaknesses into strengths.
