Memories That Move Us:
Our 14th Annual Memories Walk

Thank you to everyone who joined us on Sunday, October 15th, and everyone else who supported us for our 14th Annual Memories Walk!

Over 300 community members wore teal  Memories That Move Us t-shirts and participated in this family-friendly, three-mile walk, which followed Massachusetts Avenue in Arlington. Many participants took time to stop along the route to sign our "We Remember" banner with special dedications, messages of support, and personal memories. We all felt a strong sense of community as we walked together up Mass. Ave. to celebrate TCR and to remember those in our lives who have died.

Following our three-mile walk, we celebrated with food, entertainment, and an inspirational program at Arlington Town Hall.

We send a big thank you to the Smiles-Rodriguez family (pictured at left) for sharing their poignant personal story during the opening remarks.

We simply could not do this vital work without the support of our entire community, and we extend our heartfelt thanks to everyone who made this year's event such a resounding success. Thanks to you, we were able to raise $80,000 to support the hope-giving programs of The Children's Room.

We were so grateful to share this wonderful day with so many of you. Thank you for gathering with us in support of our mission to create safe, caring communities, so that no child, teen, or family has to grieve alone.

Training the Next Generation:

As another program year begins, The Children's Room welcomes a new group of graduate and undergraduate interns to their training program. This year, The Children's Room will provide intensive professional training and supervision to seven interns for the entire school year. The interns come from several schools and represent different disciplines.

With the help of talented and trained interns, TCR is able to leverage staff time to provide a range of programs for grieving children and families-all while helping to educate the next generation of professionals working in social work, psychology, expressive arts, and child life.

We welcome this year's talented group of interns, knowing that their contributions to The Children's Room are an integral part of our vision to be a leader in the field of grief support and a catalyst in transforming society's understanding of grief.

Skating With Purpose:
Thank You, Arlington Hockey Club!

On September 30th, the  Arlington Hockey Club  hosted its sixth annual Skate-a-Thon to benefit TCR.  This year, the AHC raised $9,000 for TCR. Over the past six years, the AHC's fundraising total has now reached $70,000

The AHC's Bantam B team raised the most money of all teams, winning a pizza party and trip to an upcoming BU hockey game.

We had a blast at the event, and we're deeply honored by and grateful for AHC's ongoing commitment to TCR.

Thank you, AHC, for all you continue to do to support TCR!

Our Teen Program:
Off to a Great Start in 2017

On October 4th, TCR's Teen Program Open House/Kickoff Event offered teens an opportunity to "mix it up," as they enjoyed speed-style discussions, icebreakers, a group playlist, and dinner while learning more about each other. This Teen Program event was the first for the majority of the 10 participants, many of whom are new to TCR's community. The teens had the chance to select their top choices for future event activities, and Teen Program staff shared about the upcoming events already being planned. To round out the evening, the participants worked collaboratively and creatively together to create a TCR Teens collage that will be hung during future teen groups and programs (pictured above).

Teens attending The Children's Room have the opportunity to participate in multiple types of services. No two teens are alike so the services we offer are designed to meet different teens and unique needs. Services for teens at TCR are varied. Some include the rest of the family while others are just for the teens. These include teen groups within their bi-weekly Family-Based Peer Support Groups, an eight-week Teens-Only Grief Support Group series, monthly Teen Program events, and School- and Community-Based Grief Peer Support Groups.

TCR's programs for teens have been off to an exciting start in the new 2017-2018 program year, and a number of teens plan to be involved in two or three of these programs at once! TCR held the Open House, peer support groups have begun, and TCR's Teens-Only Group series also began on October 11th, the first of an eight-week series. Ten to twelve teens have begun meeting and connecting together, sharing dinner and a variety of fun ways to express their opinions, experiences, and find things in common. The sessions will continue through December 6th, with another series planned for Spring 2018.

Upcoming Events: BU Hockey vs. Providence College
and Culinary Day at Milk Street Kitchen

We are looking forward to continuing our monthly Teen program events, including a BU hockey game in November and a culinary day at Milk Street Kitchen in Boston in December. Our ability to provide multiple services that are welcome to new and returning teens alike helps to build awareness about the importance of grief support services for this age group and the bonding that can occur when teens can come to a place where others "get it."

Children's Grief Awareness Day:

Children's Grief Awareness Day . . .

. . . is designed to help us all become more aware of the needs of grieving children and of the benefits that they obtain through the support of others

. . . is an opportunity for all of us to raise awareness of the painful impact that the death of a loved one has in the life of a child.

. . . is an opportunity to make sure that grieving children receive the support they need.
