Dear Skokie Families,

Each Fall, we schedule a variety of safety drills in order to stay practiced in our response to emergencies.  This week, our students and staff participated in a lockdown drill, and I wanted to use this week's newsletter to share information around the importance of this practice.  District 36 shares a strong partnership with the Winnetka Police Department in our efforts to provide a safe and secure learning environment in all of our buildings.  In 2013, we began conducting law enforcement safety drills in concert with Illinois state law.  The drills include the participation of both the Winnetka Police and Fire Departments.  The drills are conducted in a manner that is not intended to create fear or panic, but rather to instill confidence and sense of purpose in an emergency scenario.

In partnership with the Winnetka Police Department, schools may initiate a lockdown or lockout situation.  A lockout is where entrance and exit from the building is restricted, due to a dangerous situation taking place in the vicinity of the school.  A lockdown situation could be due to the possible presence of an intruder in a school or other type of accident that could pose a threat to the safety of staff and students.  

In addition to law enforcement safety drills, Winnetka Police Officers frequently visit our schools and provide a visible presence on school properties.  Before these drills, teachers talk to their classes and walk students through the procedures.  We also utilize this as an opportunity to talk about the importance of reporting unusual behavior amongst those within our school community, or perhaps a stranger in or around the building. Please take a few minutes and speak with your child about the purpose of the drills and reinforce the commitment both District 36 and the Winnetka Police Department have in keeping our students and staff safe.

Finally, I want to thank all of the students and families who showed their incredible dedication last Saturday and participated in our Skokie Shuffle despite the cold and rainy weather.  We were proud to host another hugely successful event in support of two very worthy causes.

Future Ready D36
As is always our goal in Winnetka, keeping our students at the center of all that we do is vital to the Future Ready D36 process. The Future Ready D36 Core Team has toured several schools in and around the North Shore as part of their research on how facilities and learning environments best meet the needs of students today and prepares them for the future. Here is a glimpse into some of the spaces toured so far (including New Trier High School, Sunset Ridge, North Shore Country Day School, and Lane Tech College Prep).

Kindergarten registration for 2018-2019 will open on Friday, December 1, 2017 from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at Carleton Washburne School. Children who will be five-years-old on or before September 1, 2018, are eligible to enroll.  

Click here for documents required for all new students when you register your child. Online pre-registration is available starting November 15. Registration packets will also be available at the District Office and all elementary schools beginning November 15, should you wish to pick one up prior to Registration Day. Children will not be considered enrolled until residency documentation is verified and all forms are submitted. For that information, click here. TREX Plastic Film Challenge
Thanks to the Green Team for organizing the TREX Plastic Film Challenge, which runs now through April 2018. Each year all schools participate in this program to collect plastic bags and wrap, which are recycled and made into alternate wood products.Collection bins are now in our schools.School communities that collect the most plastic will be announced on Earth Day.
