S.L.A.M (Student Leadership and Mentorship) is continuing to give back to our school by serving as walking buddies each morning, announcement crew is saying the morning announcements, and helping out as athletic assistants with our home volleyball games. Thanks to Mrs. Pignataro, SLAM participants now have special SLAM sashes to wear when we participate during school-wide activities.
This week, our leadership training continued as we had a SLAM meeting on November 8th. We did a team building activity and watched a TED talk. The TED talks that we watched this week was "Lead like the Great Conductors" by Itay Talgam. He tells us how conductors have one of the hardest forms of leadership: creating perfect harmony without making a sound. He also teaches us how there are different ways leaders take charge but should always work as a team.
On November 10th ,SLAM students will be assisting the school to honor all veterans at our school assembly. SLAM students will be presenting a white table, which displays symbols which honors those brave men and women who have served in the Armed Services. The symbols include:
- A round table to show concern for the injured and missing soldiers;
- A white cloth symbolizing the pure motives of those who served;
- A single red rose, as a remembrance of the blood shed for us all;
- A ribbon, showing commitment;
- A black napkin to remind us of the fate of the missing;
- Salt to remind us of the tears of those who are missing;
- A lemon to show bitter fate of the many missing soldiers; and
- A Bible showing the faith and resolve of those who have sacrificed so much for us and that we are one nation under God.
Please join us in remembering the brave men and women who fought for our country this Veteran's Day!

We know our teachers are great teachers, but here are some things you don't know.
This week featuring Mrs. Nisco
(8th Grade)
1.)
What does a typical Saturday look like for you?
Saturdays are typically the most boring day of my week. Like many working moms, I spend it cleaning the house, running errands, food shopping and catching up on things I did not have time to do during my busy week. When my three children were younger, we would spend most Saturdays on various playing fields and barns. Now, we just have to bring Gabriella to her pointe class and rehearsals. I always make a big breakfast to start our day and visit my parents as well.
2.)
Which fictional place would you most like to go?
Hmmm - I think maybe Stars Hollow, as my daughters and I are huge Gilmore Girls fans (would love to have a burger at Luke's) or Hogwarts because it would be so incredibly cool. I can't decide! But definitely Downton Abbey during the Edwardian era. I would love to dine at the Crawley table dressed in beautiful gowns and jewels from this era....And, I would definitely stay away from Hawkins!
3.) What is your favorite thing about being a teacher?
Do I have to pick just one? I truly love what I do - teaching is more than a career choice, it is a calling and I am passionate about teaching history. Working with my students is the best part as I get to not only help them develop academically but also watch them grow into amazing young adults. Their enthusiasm and smiles make my day! When I am able to inspire my students and ignite a curiosity about what happened before them and how it connects to their world today, this is an incredible moment! Creating life-long learners and molding tomorrow's citizens is what it's all about.
4.) Aside from necessities, what one thing could you not go a day without? Kissing my children goodnight. My kids are my world and being a mom is my most important role in life. And they have grown up so quickly!! Thank goodness for texting and Face Time so I can virtually send a kiss to Rebecca and Andrew who are both away at college but poor Gabriella gets them all!

"Time is the brush of God, as he paints his masterpiece on the heart of humanity."
- Ravi Zacharias
Dear Parents,
I hope that you all enjoyed that extra hour last weekend. We certainly needed the rest after the hectic week in school!.
I want to thank you for your cooperation
on Thursday regarding the short notice for a uniform change. We had a photographer taking pictures of our school in an effort to develop marketing materials.
What a memorable Veteran's Day Assembly we shared as a school community today! The Veterans, who have grandchildren in our school, spoke to the students about their individual experiences and memories in service. Their stories were touching and heart-warming!
Sporting their pajamas and toting stuffed animals of all sorts, students of the Lower School and their parents crowded the hallway for this year's Starry Story Night. Since 2004, Starry Story Night has presented an evening of picture book readings, and this year featured Mrs. Moran, Mr. Mahony, Mrs. Rodriguez, Mrs. Winington and Mrs Latham.
Next Wednesday and
Thursday (
November 15th/16th) we will hold Teacher/Parent Conferences. If you have not signed up for a time slot, please check with your child's teacher for a mutually convenient time.
Quarter one report cards for grades K-8 were mailed out
on Wednesday. If you have any questions, please contact your child's homeroom teacher.
As a reminder to eighth grade parents, turnaround time for transcripts and teacher recommendations is one week. Please give consideration to this timing as you apply to high schools. All high schools have different deadlines. Please check the school's web sites or speak with Mrs. Linnane if you need information on the application process or testing dates. Mrs. Linnane can be contacted at
[email protected].

Story Night
Starry Story Night Shines On
Sporting their pajamas and toting stuffed animals of all sorts, students of the Lower School and their parents crowded the hallway for this year's Starry Story Night, Friday, Nov. 3rd. Since 2004, Starry Story Night has presented an evening of picture book readings, and this year featured Mrs. Moran, Mrs. Rodriguez, Mrs. Winington, Mrs. Latham, and Mr. Mahony. Even some devoted upper schoolers, never too old to enjoy a good story, joined in the celebration.
Proud!
Congratulations to
Cailey Varas and the entire
New Canaan FC Travel Team, Girls U11 (2007) Red. This team WON the CT CUP State Finals(for U11 Girls) on November 4th, against Wilton with a final score of 3-2, with Cailey scoring the first goal for New Canaan FC, and assisting a second goal. GO BIG RED!!! :)
We are very proud of third grader Maria (Mavi) Triantafyllos who earned her B
lack Belt in Taekwondo. Among other feats, she had to break five boards with different tactics as well as a 2" cement brick with her hand. Hard work pays off, and after
three years of preparation she made her dream come true!
Special 8th Grade Visitor
Many thanks to parent and Veteran John Engel for coming to speak with the 8th grade class about his time serving our country. May God bless all those who have served our country!
Veteran's Assembly
