Spring Wood Middle School Students Participate in  Google Workshop
On Friday, October 27, Spring Wood Middle School students were given the opportunity to use cutting edge technology through the Google Expeditions Augmented Reality (AR) Pioneer Program. The school was selected to participate after District 20 instructional coaches, Jana Stevens and Jen Engstrom, applied for and were accepted into the program. Augmented reality is technology that superimposes computer-generated images into the real world - a concept similar to Snapchat filters & the Pokémon GO app. Aligning with Sp ring Wood's curriculum, students utilized Android devices and selfie sticks to impose images into the classroom from the ocean floor, WWI & II, Ancient Rome and the solar system, just to name a few.  Visit the District 20 Facebook page to view a photo album of the event.

Ignite the power and potential of each student!

Dear (Contact First Name),

Our school year is certainly going fast and it is hard to believe that we are quickly approaching parent-teacher conferences and the Thanksgiving holiday! I hope you and your children are finding success and growth inside the classroom and out.

Each year at the end of October, the Illinois State Board of Education publishes its annual District and School Report Cards. These report cards are designed to provide information related to districts and individual schools including: student and staff demographics and experience, per pupil spending and student performance on state mandated assessments such as the Partnership for Assessment of Readiness for College and Careers (PARCC) and ACCESS, an English language proficiency assessment for English language learners. Links to District 20's report cards can be found by visiting our website at  www.esd20.org or by clicking here. While state report cards provide a valuable snapshot of the success and areas of opportunity for improvement of each of our schools and the district as a whole, they also do not capture the sum total of the work we do and success we experience. We are very proud of the success of our students and consistently see growth in achievement on our Northwest Evaluation Association (NWEA) Measures of Academic Progress (MAP) and other local assessments.

We are very proud of the advancements we continue to make in our classrooms as we expand 21st Century Learning with the implementation of our 1:1 Technology Program and Social and Emotional Learning initiatives. If you would like more information about the work we do each day to provide a first class learning environment for all students, please do not hesitate to contact your child's principal.

On behalf of the entire faculty, staff, administration and Board of Education, I wish all of our families a very happy and healthy Thanksgiving!

Sincerely,
Dr. Michael Connolly
Superintendent

District 20 Board of Education News
School Board Members Day, November 15

November 15 marks the ninth official statewide observance of School Board Members Day in Illinois. Keeneyville Elementary School District 20 would like to take this opportunity to recognize and thank its Board members for their commitment and leadership to provide the best possible education for students. It is through the tireless work of Heather Weishaar, Sara Bruno, Andrea Schnorr, Darletta Anderson, April Dislers, Jennifer Kuban and Terry Walloch that our mission to ignite the power and potential of each student is realized.

October Board Meeting
The Keeneyville District 20 Board of Education held a regular board meeting on Thursday, October 26. Board Briefs from the meeting can be found below. The next regular meeting of the District 20 Board of Education will be held on Thursday, November 30 at 7:00 p.m. in the Spring Wood Middle School Library. The meetings are videotaped and can be viewed  here

October Board Briefs
  • All buildings passed annual fire Inspections conducted by the DuPage Regional Office of Education.
  • Mandatory lead testing in all buildings has begun with results coming soon.
  • Bids for roof project will return as an action item in November because the original project was over budget.
  • Ninety-six percent of local tax revenues have been collected to date.
  • HVAC project was the largest expenditure to date.
  The Board of Education approved:
  • the replacement of the Spring Wood carpeted gym floor. The carpet will be removed and replaced with a modular sport court surface. This new surface will have the look and feel of a wooden gym floor and will provide a brighter, safer and cleaner learning and competitive surface for students.
  • a five year leasing deal which will provide the district with new 80" Promethean Touchscreen Monitors to replace aging boards. This leasing plan will save the district thousands of dollars per new touchscreen monitor and will allow the Board to spread the total cost out over five fiscal years.

Parent-teacher conferences will be held from noon - 8:00 p.m. on Monday, November 20 and from 8:00 a.m. - 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, November 21. If you do not have a conference time schedule or do not remember your conference time, please contact your child's teacher as soon as possible. On October 20, State Representative, Michelle Mussman visited Greenbrook and the Early Childhood Center (ECC). Representative Mussman is pictured with Amanda Aubry, ECC assistant principal, Wendy Flaherty, D20 business manager and John Gustafson, Greenbrook principal.

The weather is getting colder and we do still go outside to play as much as we can. At this time of the year, the state mandates that we only stay inside if it is 25 degrees or below (factoring in wind chill) or if it is raining. Please make sure you dress your children warmly enough in heavy coats, hats, mittens/gloves and eventually boots and snow pants for them to play outside for 30 minutes each day.   We hope everyone has a happy and safe Thanksgiving!

Spring Wood Middle School
Students Visit College of DuPage

On October 19, students active in Spring Wood's Dare to Dream (D2D) program visited the College of DuPage where they learned about many educational and career opportunities. The students toured the state-of-the-art Robert J. Miller Homeland Security Education Center, the Technical Education Center and Greenhouse, Health Sciences Center, McAninch Arts Center and the Culinary and Hospitality Center. This is always a fun educational experience for the girls and they truly enjoy it. For many it was their first college visit and a great opportunity to start thinking about their future.

Dare to Dream (D2D) is an afterschool program dedicated to supporting Spring Wood Middle School Latina students and their families. The goal is to provide support, mentoring and opportunities for middle school students to become leaders at home, in the community and at school. The program promotes academic, cultural and social growth opportunities and is under the direction of District 20's Mrs. Noyola and Mrs. Lawrence.
