LS STUDENTS CELEBRATE NEW NATIVE CA GARDEN
On Friday November 3, Lower School students celebrated the first phase of completion of their new Native California Garden. Inspired by the recent drought, there has been a re-invigoration of the Lower School’s garden space, which was initially designed and created by alumni parent Robin Fell. Continuing her vision of campus beautification, the third and fourth grade students—along with their Science Teacher Clara Svedlund and Art Teacher Melissa Abrams—have re-imagined the space. The most prominent spot at the front of the campus now features drought tolerant native plantings, an outdoor classroom circle space, and a 25-foot mural featuring flora and fauna of the Channel Islands habitat.

The celebration of the space included Chumash-inspired activity stations, a ribbon cutting, and the garden name dedication. Students voted to name the space "Wishtoyo," which in Chumash means "bridge from the past to the future and beyond."

Thank you, Ms. Svedlund, Mrs. Abrams, and the LBS maintenance crew for working so hard to renovate this garden! It will be a wonderful place for our students to learn and be inspired.

DR. HILARY JOHNSON STEPS IN AS INTERIM LOWER SCHOOL SCIENCE TEACHER
Dr. Hilary Johnson will be filling in for Lower School Science Instructor Clara Svedlund while she is out on maternity leave. Johnson holds a Ph.D. in Teaching and Learning from UCSB and master's and bachelor's degrees from University of La Verne. She also holds a California teaching credential. Having teaching experience in kindergarten through grade five, she is excited to continue the science program while Ms. Svedlund is away. Thanks for making Dr. Johnson feel welcome during her substitute teaching time with us!
ATHLETICS CORNER
LAUREL KUJAN SIGNS NATIONAL LETTER OF INTENT TO PLAY FOR USC
Surrounded by family, friends, her coach, and teachers, Laurel Kujan '18 made Laguna Blanca girls volleyball history on Wednesday, becoming the first Owls player to sign a National Letter of Intent with a NCAA Division 1 program. She will play beach volleyball with the USC Trojans this fall.

Kujan has held a triple-A rating on the beach since her sophomore year and has also been an indoor star for the Owls. She helped Laguna make the playoffs all four years, winning a CIF-SS title in her sophomore season.

Way to go, Laurel!
FOOTBALL
Laguna Blanca's offense operated on all cylinders on Friday, November 3 in an 84-30 win over visiting Cornerstone Christian in a CIF-SS 8-Man Football Division 2 playoff game.

The victory advances the Owls (6-2) to a quarterfinal game at fourth-seeded Desert Christian Academy in Bermuda Dunes tomorrow, Friday November 10.

VOLLEYBALL
An incredible era of girls volleyball at Laguna Blanca came to an end last Saturday night at Merovick Gym. Six seniors who made the playoffs as freshmen, won a CIF-Southern Section title and finished as CIF State runners-up as sophomores, and reached the section semifinals and regional quarterfinals as juniors, had their careers come to close in a Division 5 quarterfinal match. Sadly, Fourth-seeded Sonora played well in all phases of the game and swept the Owls, 31-29, 25-18, 25-23.

“This senior class has won a lot of games, and I’m extremely proud of their efforts,” Laguna coach Jason Donnelly said.

CROSS COUNTRY
Pisci Abrego '20 received an honorable mention at the Santa Barbara Athletic Round Table this week.

The Girls Cross Country team has been invited to run the CIF Prelims at Riverside City Cross Country Course on Saturday, November 11.

TENNIS
On Friday, November 3, the Owls played top-seeded Maranatha to a 9-9 tie in sets, but the Owls came up short in total games and fell 78-70 in a CIF Division 5 second-round girls tennis playoff match.

ACE ANGELOFF GOLF CLASSIC RAISES MORE THAN $10K IN SCHOLARSHIPS
On Monday, nearly 70 golfers—parents, grandparents, and alumni—gathered at La Cumbre Country Club for a fun-filled day of golf, raising over $10,000 for Laguna’s Alumni Scholarship Program. Thank you to Laguna parent, trustee, and alumnus Dave Bradley ’99 and alumna Suzanne Jakubowski ’96 for organizing the Sixth Annual Laguna Blanca Angeloff Golf Classic.

The event was created to enhance alumni connections with the school and to raise funds to support Laguna’s Alumni Scholarship Fund. The fund is part of Laguna’s generous tuition assistance program that provides over $1.5 million in tuition assistance to nearly 100 Santa Barbara students each year.

Alumnus and faculty member Blake Dorfman ’02 played in this year’s Classic and commented, “There was a lot of laughter to be heard on Monday at La Cumbre Country Club. Some of it was due to ridiculously bad golf shots, but most of it was due to the camaraderie among people having fun in support of our beloved school. My squad is already gearing up to defend the B-flight title next year, but I anticipate some young alumni filling the ranks and shooting low scores. What a great day!”

Many thanks to all the players and sponsors who continue to give back to the Laguna community and support our students today.
