LMSAI FEATURED EVENT

Since late August, more than half a million Rohingya Muslims have left their homes in western Myanmar, in what the UN describes as "a textbook case of ethnic cleansing." The panel will discuss the violence and why there appears to be mass support among the Myanmar public for the military's campaign against the Rohingya.

Panelists include j ournalist  Francis Wade , activist  Kyaw Hsan Hlaing , refugee  Mohammad Mustak Arif and moderator Kate Cronin-Furman , who have all undertaken extensive research on the ground in western Myanmar.

David Dean Shulman (Hebrew University), offers readings from one section of the Tamil text, Kampaṉ's twelfth-century Iramavataram, the Cittirakuṭap patalam, when the heroes enter into their new home in the wilderness. Shulman explores both what the poet tells us as well as what is left unsaid.

James Mallinson, Senior Lecturer in Sanskrit and Classical Indian Studies at the University of London, will discuss links between Buddhist and Śaiva Tantric Yogis in Western India in the 11th-15th centuries as a part of the South Asian Religions Colloquium (SARC).

Do you have an idea for a project that will have a positive impact on India or Pakistan? LMSAI awards grants to interdisciplinary, early-stage ventures. To participate, each teams must contain at least one current Harvard student.
