SUPERINTENDENT PHILLIPS CONTINUES VISITS WITH INTERMEDIATE STUDENTS
Santa Ana Unified School District (SAUSD) Superintendent Dr. Stefanie Phillips is aiming to dialogue with students at all SAUSD intermediate and K-8 schools by the end of 2017 to learn more about the district's students and to identify how SAUSD can better serve them. She has visited various campuses in recent weeks including Mendez Fundamental, Sierra Preparatory Academy, Willard Intermediate and, most recently, Carr Intermediate where she received a warm welcome on November 7, 2017. "What a fantastic community!" Dr. Phillips wrote on her Facebook page, where she posts updates from these meetings. SAUSD STUDENTS HONORED DURING UCI LAW ACADEMY CEREMONY
Approximately 48 SAUSD students participated in the UCI Saturday Academy of Law (SAL) student recognition program on November 4, 2017 at UC Irvine. SAL is a series of Saturday morning classes for 9th grade students from SAUSD and the Anaheim Unified High School District to help them develop the skills they need to successfully pursue higher education and a potential law career. Students are given an opportunity to learn about the field of law and improve their reading, writing, critical thinking, and speaking skills. The event celebrated students who completed the six-week program. Students from Century, Godinez Fundamental, Middle College, Saddleback, Santa Ana, Segerstrom, and Santa Ana Valley high schools were recognized. To learn more about SAL, click here.

NEW MURAL DEBUTS AT ROOSEVELT
Roosevelt Elementary School this week held a ribbon cutting ceremony for a new pedestrian safety mural that was donated by State Farm and painted by Operation Clean Slate. Operation Clean Slate involves students in the creation of brightly-colored murals that beautify school campuses and communities. The images contain positive, beneficial, and educational messages to promote topics like good nutrition and healthy eating, pedestrian safety, and more. To date, Operation Clean Slate has partnered with over 25,000 volunteers and produced over 800 murals at 400 schools across Southern California and in other countries.

OC REGISTER STORY HIGHLIGHTS SAUSD'S GANG REDUCTION EFFORTS
The Orange County Register has published a new story about how SAUSD is teaming up with other organizations to curb gang-related crime and help children stay out of gangs. It highlights SAUSD's work with the Orange County Gang Reduction Intervention Partnership (GRIP), Project Kinship, and more. To read it, click here.

VALLEY STUDENTS ATTEND 'HAMILTON' PRODUCTION
Forty-nine students from Santa Ana Valley High School were among 2,700 to recently attend a performance of the musical "Hamilton" at the Pantages Theatre in Hollywood. Students were treated to a Q&A with cast members; Valley was the only Orange County school to attend. Students were provided with curriculum months prior to the show, which included primary source analysis. They also created a poem, rap, monologue, skit or song using the primary sources provided.

WILSON RECEIVES VISIT FROM NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLING AUTHOR
On November, 3, 2017, Wilson Elementary scholars were treated to a visit from author Jennifer Chambliss Bertman, who writes stories with a bit of mystery, a bit of humor, and a lot of fun. Her debut novel, Book Scavenger, was an Indie Next Kids' Top Ten Pick, a Junior Library Guild selection, and one of five titles chosen for Publisher's Weekly Best Summer Middle Grade Books for 2015, among other accolades. Wilson scholars listened to an inspiring presentation of Jennifer's journey to becoming a published author. Students left the assembly inspired to read, write and create. "Jennifer inspired me to follow my dream of being anything I want to be," said fourth grader Nicole Garcia.

WALKER STUDENTS VISIT GRIFFITH OBSERVATORY
Fifth graders from Walker Elementary recently visited the Griffith Observatory in Los Angeles. The field trip was paid for with school funds. "It was an amazing opportunity for the students, as they learned about planets and telescopes," said Principal Mariana Garate. The field trip supported Next Generation Science Standards.

CENTURY SENIOR TO PERFORM IN TOURNAMENT OF ROSES HONOR BAND
Century High School Senior Douglass Torres has been selected to participate in the 2018 Tournament of Roses Honor Band and will perform in the New Year's Day Rose Parade in front of millions of spectators. This marks the third prestigious selection for Douglass - having been selected to the Macy's honor band in 2016 and the All Southern California Wind Ensemble in 2017. Douglass is excited for this opportunity and looks forward to auditioning once again for the All Southern and California State honor ensembles in 2018.

FIRST SERVE SANTA ANA RECOGNIZED FOR COMMUNITY INVOLVEMENT
Congratulations to our community partner First Serve Santa Ana for being named the Community Program of the Year for 2017 by the Southern California Section of the United States Tennis Association. First Serve exposes SAUSD students to the game of tennis by providing free tennis lessons and coaching. The award is given to a community program in the Southern California Section that partners with their community to help grow tennis at a local level. First Serve Santa Ana and other award winners were honored November 4, 2017.

SUPERINTENDENT RAISING MONEY FOR SCHOOL UNIFORMS - YOU CAN HELP
Help SAUSD Superintendent Dr. Stefanie Phillips raise money to purchase school uniforms for SAUSD students as part of a fundraiser being conducted by the Santa Ana Assistance League. Dr. Phillips will be riding the Carousel of Possible Dreams at Disneyland multiple times on on November 15, 2017 for this worthy cause. To donate any amount, please click here to sponsor Dr. Phillips. The goal of the Santa Ana Assistance League is to raise a total of $50,000. With these funds, they plan to provide school uniforms, undergarments, backpacks, shoes, and much more to over 3,400 SAUSD students at the start of next school year.
