Fresh Air Returns to Afternoons Starting Monday
Fresh Air logo
Today is KGOU's final airing of To The Point with Warren Olney. As that show transitions away from a daily broadcast toward a weekly podcast, KGOU will have a schedule vacancy to fill. Fresh Air with Terry Gross will fill the 2 p.m. Monday-Thursday time slot beginning next week, but will also remain in its current 7 p.m. slot as well.

Retro Cocktail Hour
Another program change is coming to the weekend schedule: The Retro Cocktail Hour will replace Backstage Jazz on Sunday nights at 11 p.m. We think KGOU listeners will enjoy this offbeat musical exploration of the weird and wacky. And lastly, we'll make a slight adjustment to our local news programming: the Journal Record's Business Intelligence Report is moving to Wednesday's newsmagazines instead of Friday's.

As always, we welcome your thoughts at [email protected]. We've updated our printable schedule for a hard-copy reminder of what's on when.

The News Media: Let's Talk About Journalism's Role

Have you ever wondered what daily life in a newsroom looks like -- how are editorial decisions made, what are the ethical standards, and how do journalists approach their work? KGOU General Manager Dick Pryor has developed an interactive talk, designed for civic groups or other organizations that want to learn more about media literacy and journalism's role in a democratic society. To get your group in consideration for Dick's schedule in 2018, send him an email at this link:

NPR News Series: 'Been There' Through Life's Changes
illustration of people opening doors
Life's changing circumstances can seem overwhelming -- an elected official about to take office for the first time; facing life alone after a spouse dies suddenly; or a transgender person going through sexual reassignment -- experiences you can only fully understand if you've been through them. NPR News is connecting people who've 'been there' and they're letting us in on conversations about hopes and fears and what comes next. This ongoing series resumes the week of Nov. 13 and continues through December on All Things Considered.

Finding Mustafa: NPR International Video Project
Mustafa Ahmed was two years old in 2004 when he lost his leg in a U.S. air strike in Fallujah, Iraq. A nonprofit brought him and his father to the U.S. temporarily for medical treatment and the two formed friendships in America. When Fallujah later fell under ISIS control, Mustafa's American friends feared the worst.

In memory of fallen colleagues David Gilkey and Zabihullah Tamanna, NPR received a grant from the Corporation for Public Broadcasting for international video projects. NPR's video team, the International Desk and Jane Arraf, NPR's correspondent based in Cairo, crafted this video report about Mustafa and his journey.

Planning For The Great Thanksgiving Listen 2017
As you make your holiday preparations, StoryCorps is asking you to make a new tradition: pause, listen, and honor the voices of a generation by interviewing a loved one. Sit down with a grandparent or other elder, a friend, neighbor, or anyone else who means something to you, and ask them questions about their life. StoryCorps has how-to's and more details at this link:

Ticket Giveaway ~ The Hot Club of San Francisco - Cinema Vivant
five musicians with stringed instruments
Recalling the open-air dances of 1930s Europe, The Hot Club of San Francisco presents Cinema Vivant, an evening of vintage silent films accompanied by live "gypsy jazz." Oklahoma City Community College presents this evening of entertainment Thursday, Nov. 16; we've got tickets to give away in a random drawing.

Ticket Giveaway ~ Ray Chen at Armstrong Auditorium
Man playing violin
Charismatic violinist Ray Chen has taken the classical music world by storm, winning major accolades and amassing a huge following of young fans. He takes the Armstrong stage on Nov. 28 to play a fun yet challenging program of great violin music from Spain, France, Belgium, Germany and Hungary. Enter our drawing for a chance to win a pair of tickets.

Congratulations to our winners!
In our last issue we gave away tickets to piano masters Christopher O'Riley and Pablo Ziegler at Armstrong Auditorium tonight. Our winners are Phyllis and Ben. We also gave away tickets to the Oklahoma Festival Ballet at OU this past weekend to winners Liane and Karen.
