The IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (EMBS) invites nominations for EMBS Distinguished Lecturers. The IEEE EMBS Distinguished Lecturers Program provides high quality speakers to the Biomedical Engineering Community, especially, EMBS Chapters, Student Branch Chapters, and Student Clubs.  Appointment as an EMBS Distinguished Lecturer is a major Society recognition. The Distinguished Lecturers are selected by the Awards Committee and announced in December after approval by the EMBS AdCom.
Call for Participation: IEEE Brain Data Bank Competition

This is the last in a series of challenges and competitions sponsored by IEEE Brain Initiative in 2017 that explore various brain/neuro datasets. Datasets for the Boston competition are provided by the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign and were collected as part of a broader intervention-based study via funding by the Intelligence Advanced Research Projects Activity (IARPA) under the Strengthening Human Adaptive Reasoning and Problem-solving (SHARP) program. The full datasets can be downloaded from IEEE Dataport.

Cash awards will be given to top winners.

Call for Contributed Papers at EMBC 2018
Author Instructions for Contributed Papers - Full

C ontributed Papers-Full are presented either as an oral presentation or a poster presentation. The type of presentation will be determined by the Conference Editorial Board based on factors such as the reviewer's suggestions and topic of the paper. All presented and contributed papers will be published in IEEE Xplore and indexed by PubMed and Medline.


At least one author of the paper must be registered at the appropriate full conference rate (Member, Non-member, Student member, Student non-member) in order to upload the final paper. If complete payment of a registration fee is not received, authors will not be able to proceed with uploading their final manuscript. While any author of the paper may be registered, only the designated "corresponding author" may upload the final paper. Once a manuscript has been uploaded, the registration fees cannot be refunded. Please be sure that the attending author completes payment and uploads the final paper. This means that they must be the "corresponding author".

Technical Activities Spotlight
News from the IEEE EMBS Technical Committee on Biomedical
Imaging & Image Processing


It has been a busy autumn for members of the IEEE EMBS Technical Committee on Biomedical Imaging and Image Processing (TC BIIP). The fall meeting of the EMBS Administrative Committee was held in Los Angeles, CA, USA. The meeting was attended by four TC BIIP members: Elsa Angelini from Imperial College London (UK) & Columbia University (USA) in her role of Vice President of the Society for Technical Activities, Julia Schnabel from King's College London (UK) representing Europe, Roberto Lavarello from Pontificia Universidad Catolica (Peru) representing South America and Amir Amini from the University of Louisville (USA) representing North America. 

Marius George Linguraru from Children's National Health System and George Washington University (USA) is a Distinguished Lecturer of the EMB Society. He recently traveled to Latin America to lecture and meet students in Mexico, including Universidad Panamericana and Universidad National Autonoma de Mexico, and Colombia at the Universidad National de Colombia. Additional activities in Latin America were led by Natasha Lepore from Children's Hospital Los Angeles and University of Southern California (USA) who co-Chaired the 13th International Symposium on Medical Information Processing and Analysis held on the Island of San Andres in Colombia.

Two signature EMBS meetings will be organized by members of TC BIIP in 2018. Jean-Christophe Olivo-Marin from Institut Pasteur (France) has been preparing the program of the 13th IEEE EMBS International Summer School on Biomedical Imaging, to be held in St Jacut Abbaye, Brittany, France June 14-22, 2018. Amir Amini from the University of Louisville (USA) and Erik Meijering from the Erasmus Medical Center (Netherlands) have supervised the paper submission and review assignment process for the IEEE International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging 2018, as General Chair and Program Co-chair. The symposium will be held in Washington DC, April 4-7, 2018; information at http://biomedicalimaging.org/2018/.

TC BIIP is excited to promote the field of biomedical imaging and image processing to diverse scientific, medical and social communities. If you would like to join our group of experts, please send your candidature to the TC chairs. Elections will be held in early 2018.

WORK AT MIT'S CENTER FOR GYNEPATHOLOGY RESEARCH IS REVEALING HOW TISSUE ENGINEERING CAN HELP ADDRESS GYNECOLOGICAL DISORDERS
 
Endometriosis occurs when the endometrial tissue normally expelled from the uterus at the end of a menstrual cycle is instead trapped inside the body. There, like cancer, it continues to grow, eventually irritating the surrounding tissue. Over time, that irritated tissue can eventually form scar tissue, which, in severe cases, can cause pelvic tissues and even organs to adhere to each other like superglue. Women with the disease can suffer extreme pain and, in many cases, infertility. Although up to 10% of women in the United States are thought to have endometriosis, the cause remains elusive. There is no one culprit but rather a constellation of genes influenced by environmental factors like chemical exposure and stress, creating a degree of complexity that has made the condition extremely difficult to treat. Gynecological diseases such as this are poorly understood not only because they are complex but also because research is desperately underfunded. In fact, it was only about a year ago that an NIH gynecology branch was even created. But the founders of the Center for Gynepathology Research hope to change this with new research into pervasive medical issues such as endometriosis. 
Embroidered Electromyography: A Systematic Design Guide

Muscle activity monitoring or Electromyography (EMG) is a useful tool. However, EMG is typically invasive, expensive and difficult to use for untrained users. A possible solution is textile-based surface EMG (sEMG) integrated into clothing as a wearable device. This is, however, challenging due to (i) uncertainties in the electrical properties of conductive threads used for electrodes, (ii) imprecise fabrication technologies (e.g., embroidery, sewing), and (iii) lack of standardization in design variable selection. This paper, for the first time, provides a design guide for such sensors by performing a thorough examination of the effect of design variables on sEMG signal quality. Results show that imprecisions in digital embroidery lead to a trade-off between low electrode impedance and high manufacturing consistency. An optimum set of variables for this trade-off is identified and tested with sEMG during a variable force isometric grip exercise with n=12 participants, compared with conventional gel-based electrodes. Results show that threadbased electrodes provide a similar level of sensitivity to force variation as gel-based electrodes with about 90% correlation to expected linear behavior. As proof of concept, jogging leggings with integrated embroidered sEMG are made and successfully tested for detection of muscle fatigue while running on different surfaces.
