Dear Clients, Supporters, Colleagues and Friends,
We've just returned from a holiday visit with family and are now focused on final preparations for the upcoming show and sale with fellow Roycrofters this weekend. We are grateful for the new opportunities we have to see our parents regularly and cherish that our clients both near and far have helped us embrace our new business model built around family. Thank you.
In free moments, we have been enjoying the beauty of fall and have sought time in nature that, not only rejuvenates, but always provides inspiration that we put into our projects.
We hope you all had meaningful experiences for Thanksgiving.

As time allows, CJ has been hard at work in his studio passionately driven on a new set of landscapes, and a thoughtful collection of Bird & Flower paintings.
He is honing his painting skills and taking cues from our new setting in Western PA. As a result of this work, we are happy to share with you the creation of landscapes inspired by the alluring deciduous forests, lakes, ponds, rivers, mountains, and — of course — architecture of our surrounding region.

花鳥畫 I
nspired By Nature 花鳥絵
|
|
Ever passionate about Japanese art and other Far Eastern art traditions that influenced the Arts & Crafts Movement, I've begun to play with a form known as
hua niao hua
, paintings of birds and flowers.
Hua niao
began in 10th century China, and like so much of my work, emphasizes passages of pure color that are defined by meticulously rendered black outlines.
The bird-and-flower subject eventually made its way to Japan where it developed its own style, and made the leap from painting to a type of
ukiyo-e
woodblock printing known as
kachō-e
. It was these
kacho-e
and other types of
ukiyo-e
that caught the imaginations of Western artists, and inspired the artists of the flourishing Arts & Crafts and Art Nouveau movements. My new paintings are very much kindred spirits to, and fresh conceptions of the
kacho-e
, from which I am inspired.

The Park Entrance
[$1300.00]
The Park Entrance was inspired by Hasson Park. The Arts & Crafts stone entry portals are the gateway to the park which comprises acres of open and forested land. Numerous hiking trails wind their way through oaks and other hardwood trees, and a collection of rare rhododendron, which bloom abundantly in spring. We were, of course, impressed by the portals fashioned from stone in a rustic Arts & Crafts style fitting to the rural flavor of the park that is actually set inconspicuously within the heart of Oil City. The park was founded in 1895 (the same year as the Roycroft Campus), by banker and oilman, William Hasson (1833-1923). Hasson was a philanthropist who owned much of what became downtown Oil City, and he bequeathed significant acreage to the city for both charitable and civic use, including Hasson Park. The stone arches were built as a memorial in appreciation of this generous man.

As a child, I spent a lot of time outdoors and in the woods, and have fond memories of watching birds flit from flower to tree, clinging to stems and branches while feasting on mites and insects that populated the plants. In the winter, mom and I would watch the birds enduring the long frigid season by feasting at the bird feeder kept full by mom and dad. These memories from childhood, and new adult observations, have combined with an imaginative interpretation of nature to form my recent paintings.
