Tourism Talk - October 2017

PresidentMessage from the President and CEO
What is Tourism?
Ronald Drisdelle
Defining what tourism actually is can be difficult.Tourism is, in essence, a concept measured by visitor movements and expenditure (demand) and the existence of a wide range of visitor facilities (supply).  New Brunswick can boast of having great beaches, beautiful coastal views and picturesque scenery.  Yes, our province's landscape is definitely a selling feature.  That said, the reality is that without tourism businesses and continued business growth tourism wouldn't exist!
Tourism is a dynamic and competitive industry, and the fastest growing in many parts of the world.  In today's business climate, the capacity to adapt quickly to an ever changing and tough environment is crucial for success.  Repeat business and meeting customer expectations, combined with offering authentic experience, is today's formula for success.

I'm sure there are many businesses out there that do not fully realise their connection to tourism.  I like to say most businesses are linked to tourism.

Tourists spend on:
Gas and Oil
Groceries
Cultural activities
Restaurants & Bars
Accommodations
Sports & recreation
Clothing purchases
Transportation
(including vehicle rentals)
Convenience stores

This does not take into account how tourism also influences the construction and manufacturing sectors.  Tourism, by no short measure, contributes significantly toward enhancing our communities and our province as a whole; where we enjoy great education systems, good health care and modern infrastructure.

Did you know that NB's Tourism Sector employs 31,200 people?  It brings in 106 million in provincial taxes and 16 million to municipalities each year.  NB's Tourism GDP equals the combined GDP of Agriculture, Forestry and Fishery.   Did you also know that tourism is New Brunswick's 3rd largest industry?  Tourism is definitely a serious sector; a driving force behind job creation and it increases export earnings and growth of the provincial economy.

So what is tourism?  Today we can all be proud and say that tourism in NB is the "talk of the town." And rightly so, as we come to appreciate its true influence on our economy...and ultimately our communities.  Tourism is a booming Industry from which we ALL BENEFIT.

Thank you, tourism businesses, for your outstanding impact on the evolution of the NB tourism industry over the years.

Ronald Drisdelle, President and CEO

And now, this month's featured article - Protecting Your Backlinks Profile

tech-articleProtecting Your Backlinks Profile

I n our continuing series on Negative SEO, today we're talking about backlinks.

A backlink, also called an "inbound link" or "incoming link", is created when one website links to another. The link between the two websites is the backlink - so named because it points back to the page that linked to it.

Backlinks are especially valuable for SEO because they represent a "vote of confidence" from one site for another, and to a search engine like Google, this says your site must be important. The more links, the more importance your site is given. However, the  content of those sites also matters.

Most often, spammers will perform negative SEO against your website by building low quality links or redirects from sites with completely unrelated content. (Think of the bad stuff that's out there -- these are the sites they'll probably link to you.) It is vitally important to know when someone is creating links or redirects to your website. This is the most important action you can take in preventing spammers from succeeding.

From time to time, you should do a manual check of backlinks to your website. You can use free tools like https://smallseotools.com/backlink-checker/, or there are many paid options. (A search for "backlink checker" will produce plenty of choices.) Some of the paid options can send you email alerts when your website gains or loses important backlinks, which is a definite advantage. Instead of having to manually check your backlinks, you can have everything you need to know sent to your inbox.

Next time: How to remove a bad backlink. Stay tuned!
