Dear Friends,

Throughout the month of October, which is Domestic Violence Awareness Month, you may see our giant purple purse in various local spots. (See the schedule below.)

As we did last year, we are using the big purse to highlight our participation in The Allstate Foundation's annual Purple Purse Challenge, an all out effort to raise awareness of domestic violence and funding for critical services.

The purple purse is not only the symbol for this campaign, it's also an important reminder of the link between domestic violence and financial abuse.

Consider this story from one of our clients: "I had a great job in the corporate world where I was able to take care of my husband and family financially. Even though my income supported the family, my husband controlled all of our finances. He was also physically abusive. I got really good at hiding my bruises with make-up, but I had to take sick days when it got bad.  One day a colleague handed me a card and said ""I don't know what you're going through, but you might need this." The card had a number for YWCA Evanston/North Shore. Calling YWCA and getting help changed my life."

When you see the giant purple purse I hope it will compel you to join us in this meaningful fundraiser. With your support, we can win the nationwide Challenge and receive an additional $100,000 from Allstate Foundation - that's huge! Click here to donate. Your gift of any amount makes a difference.

Thank you!

Men's Leadership Initiative is getting attention

Antonio Rice, YWCA Violence Prevention Educator (center) is recognized for his work during Evanston Township High School's Sept. 28 football game. Antonio is standing with ETHS Superintendent Eric Witherspoon and Athletic Director Chris Livatino.
Make It Better recently featured a story about our ongoing initiatives to involve men in addressing domestic violence: Is Violence Against Women Really a Men's Issue? These Local Men Say Yes and Are Taking  Action.

"We're working with the YWCA on creating an educational model specifically for our coaches - so they can get the knowledge and skills they need. Our goal at ETHS isn't just to win games and develop athletes, but also to develop the best citizens." - Chris Livatino, Athletic Director at Evanston Township High School
