KENSTON MIDDLE SCHOOL UPDATE

As a full investigation is still underway, there are some details we are not able to share at this time. However, we want to provide answers from the Board of Education meeting and meetings with parent groups to get additional feedback so that we can be as transparent as possible.

1.  Is the district reviewing its evacuation procedures?
Yes, the district is in the process of reviewing its evacuation and other emergency procedures to ensure that they are effective and properly communicated to staff and students.

2. What is the plan if it is not safe to open KMS once work is done?
We are committed to resolving any issues that have occurred due to the roofing project as well as follow up with air quality testing. We will not return students or staff to classes at KMS until the building has been cleared.

3. Was roof work being done during the school day?
Yes, some work that was non-disruptive to the educational process was contractually allowed to be completed during the school day.

4. Has the District been advised that air quality was an issue?
Yes, over the years a few of our Middle School staff members have expressed concerns about the temperature and air flow in the building. We have removed and installed two (2) new air handlers. We will conduct air quality testing before returning students and staff to classes at the Middle School.

5. How did you determine how extensive the roofing project would be?
As part of our facility planning, we conducted a roofing assessment to determine if a full roof tear-off or partial roof replacement was needed. On May 19, 2017, RoofTEC conducted ground-based infrared moisture detection surveys using state-of-the-art infrared technology. The purpose of the Infrared Roof Survey is to detect wet insulation within a roofing system. Attached are the findings.
