Lottery Dollars: Small Investment, Big Return for Montrose
$300,000 GOCO Grant, the First Domino to Over $35,000,000 in Investment
By Ken Sherbenou
In Montrose, the parks and recreation system is essential to the quality of life and health of the community-economically, socially, and physically. At the core of the building of the system in Montrose is investment from the Colorado Lottery.

With the opening of the Montrose Community Recreation Center, indoor recreation has recently progressed Montrose to being a leading community in Colorado for Parks and Recreation, which is incidentally, the motto of our fundraising partner, the Montrose Recreation Foundation.  This is thanks of course to Montrose voters and taxpayers, but also, as I'll explain, the Colorado Lottery. The first proposal to build the center was met with only 23 percent support. After 30 years of effort, more than 10 separate plans, and five votes, the Montrose CRC is now a reality in 2017. Montrose is now home to a state-of-the-art, 80,000-square-foot center, complete with GOCO-funded outdoor facilities, including pickleball courts, climbing boulders, a walking trail, and multi-purpose fields. In our first six months of operation, the center has more than 7,000 annual pass holders and sees an average daily participation of over 1,500.  Thank you again for your wonderful engagement, appreciation and utilization of your CRC! Now we get to do it again with the Field House, the renovated old Aquatic Center.  Please join us for the Grand Opening on Saturday Dec. 2nd from 10am to 3pm!

As for the next project, lottery dollars are flowing into Montrose at a rate unseen in Lottery's history.  The largest grant from GOCO and the Colorado Lottery, $2,000,000, was just earned.  The City of Montrose (City) and its central project partner, the Montrose Recreation District (MRD), along with a broad coalition of supporters interested in improving our parks and recreation system, will be building the Connecting the People to their Parks and Recreation trail project.  This is a game-changing project that dramatically moves the trail system forward by building the community's first two bike/pedestrian underpasses using existing bridges as well as 2.25 miles of trail connecting the vast majority of the parks and recreation system.  Design will commence in 2018 and construction will happen in 2019, with the opening planned for the end of that year.

How did Montrose make so much rapid progress with our parks and recreation system?

First and foremost, are the citizens and community members that have approved, have largely paid for, have advocated for and have volunteered to make these great improvements happen.  Think Judy Ann Files, Jason Ullmann and Barbara Bynum.  Secondly, critical to the success of the overall effort and a key resource that was fully and completely tapped into, was the support and availability of lottery dollars for parks and recreation!

In 2011, the MRD and the City of Montrose had applied to GOCO for separate outdoor recreation projects. Both were denied funding. GOCO staff provided ideas for improving the plans, including combining their two adjacent projects into one. The resulting project, the Montrose Water Sports Park, River Trail and Field Renovation project, won $300,000 in GOCO funding in a highly competitive 2012 grant cycle that saw only 18% of projects funded. The success drew the MRD and the City together as closer partners, and in 2014, the collaboration resulted in its biggest win yet. The City referred a sales tax increase ballot proposal to voters on MRD's behalf and encouraged citizens to support it. Voters thankfully approved the plan, effectively making the CRC dream a reality. Therefore, the 2012 GOCO grant worth $300,000 has directly led to over $35,000,000 in improvements.

Mayor Judy Ann Files summed it up when she said, "Lottery funds are a big reason Montrose is a vibrant place to be." MRD Board President Barbara Bynum agreed: "Without GOCO and Lottery proceeds for Parks and Recreation, the future of Montrose, and Colorado, for that matter, would look a lot less bright!"

Lottery is up for reauthorization at the General Assembly in the near future.  Therefore, it is imperative to remember the amazing and critical contribution made by Lottery proceeds to making Colorado the best place in the country to live, work and play, as well as making Montrose the special place we all know and love.

Congratulations to Rebecca Reichard, MRD's Part-Time of the Quarter pictured below with Executive Director Ken Sherbenou and Fitness Leader John Wagner.  Rebecca teaches most every group fitness class MRD offers and does exceedingly well to have high participation in her classes.  John is the MRD Core Staff Member of the Quarter.  John has recently been promoted to a full time position because he makes a very important contribution to our community by overseeing the fitness area, over 40 group fitness classes per week, the MRD personal training program and also serves as a regular Manager on Duty.  Not pictured is Bob Nicholson, who is the Volunteer of the Quarter.  Not only is Bob a private citizen and the General Contractor that built the Aquatic Center in 1986, he is also a tremendous advocate and leader for the major progress to the parks and recreation system Montrose has recently experienced.  We want to extent a huge thank you to all three of our people of the quarter for everything they do for the Montrose Recreation District and the community we serve.

Holiday Fitness Survival:
Holidays are coming, but don't let them derail your fitness program! Exercise consistency, even during the holidays, can help you achieve results. Here are some great tips to stay on track during the holiday season:
1) Schedule your workouts. Rather than leaving your workout to chance, set aside time dedicated to hitting the gym or getting to a group fitness class.
2) Get up and go early. Is it possible for you to change your schedule to exercise earlier? If so, you can get your workout in and still have time to get holiday chores done during the day!
3) Grab a friend. It can be hard to motivate yourself when the weather turns cold and the days become short, but it is easier if you are not alone. Grab a friend and hold each other accountable. You'll be less likely to skip your workout if someone is counting on you.
4) Evaluate yourself. Keep track of your progress every 2 weeks during the holiday season to help you stay on track and stay motivated.
5) Indulge and resist. During the holidays, it makes no sense to deprive yourself of your favorite foods. Just be smart about it! Carefully choose foods you want to indulge in, but limit yourself to one serving. Resist the urge to have seconds by putting food away instead of leaving it out to "pick at" throughout the day.
6) Be active with your loved ones. The holiday season can be more fun if you have activities to do with your family and loved ones. Get outside for walking, sledding, a local 5k, etc. Bring family and guests to the Montrose Community Rec Center for swimming, basketball, rock climbing, racquetball, and group fitness classes, all of which are great ways for families to spend more time together!
