November comes and November goes,
With the last red berries and the first white snows.
With night coming early, and dawn coming late,
And ice in the bucket and frost by the gate.
The fires burn and the kettles sing,
And earth sinks to rest until next spring.

We're really excited for the upcoming
Spirit of Giving Project, which will take place on
Saturday, December 2nd from 10am - 1pm. We've been collecting gift items for the past month, but still need more! When you donate gift items for our clients, you brighten their holiday season. It's a small gesture that goes a long way. If you're interested in donating a gift, bring it by our offices during business hours. Please make your donation by Thanksgiving.
If you'd like to participate in the event itself, please RSVP to Lauren at
[email protected]. It's a fun and festive event where you get to meet other volunteers, wrap presents, create gift bags, and have a delicious lunch on us!
We're almost through
Phase One of our building renovation project! We know you're all excited to get back to our Siler location and enjoy the new space.
Longhorn Construction is doing an excellent job and we couldn't be happier. Thanks to each of you who helped make this vision a reality - the donors, board and committee members, staff, and volunteers. It's our legacy that we're offering to the Santa Fe community, which will serve those in need for many years to come.
During Phase Two,
KITCHENALITY's new home will take shape, as well as the staff's offices and a new volunteer room. We'll keep you posted about what to expect and when.

Holiday volunteers serving up Thanksgiving stuffing |
|
November might be the tastiest of all months. Not only can you start eating root vegetables, soups, stews, gratins and roasted
everything, but the month is finished off in style with the most glorious of all American eating holidays - Thanksgiving! We celebrate Thanksgiving in style here at
Kitchen Angels. We really pamper our clients so they don't feel like they're missing out on any of the festivities. Our holiday menu is indeed something to behold. In addition to the standard turkey and stuffing, we serve some of the most delicious side dishes and desserts.
Speaking of side dishes...they really can make or break the holiday menu. It's easy to tire of the
same old mashed potatoes and green bean casserole. Here's an outstanding collection of
105 Easy Thanksgiving Side Dishes That Steal the Spotlight from
Bon Appétit. It really is one of the best recipe collections that we've ever feasted our eyes upon. (Lauren has already made the root vegetable gratin to rave reviews from her family)
We are truly grateful for all of the regular and visiting volunteers who chip in their time to cook Thanksgiving dinner for our homebound clients. It means the world to us...and our clients!
If you signed up to make a pie for Thanksgiving dinner, dress it up a bit this year. There are so many clever ways you can make an ordinary pie stand out from the rest. Check out this short video for some fun ideas.

Kitchen Angels' delicious, simple & diabetic friendly food!
|
|
We're proud of the fact that all of the meals that we prepare at Kitchen Angels are diabetic-friendly. Sounds good, but what does that really mean? A diabetic diet means eating healthy, fresh foods in moderate amounts at regular intervals. The meals should be rich in nutrients and low in fat and calories. Key elements are protein, fruits, vegetables and whole grains, with carbohydrates and sugar limited.
Since November is National Diabetes Month, it can't hurt to know more about this very common
disease
. In New Mexico, 14.1% of the population is living with diabetes, and an additional 39.7% of the population are pre-diabetic. The condition costs New Mexicans an estimated 2 billion dollars each year! Proper nutrition goes a long way to help combat the ravages of this disease, and Kitchen Angels is happy to do our part.
November is also National Caregivers Appreciation month, and

we want you all to know how much we appreciate all that you do! Did you know that Kitchen Angels assists some of our clients' caregivers? When the Cancer Foundation for New Mexico temporarily houses individuals from out of town and who come to Santa Fe for their cancer treatments, we feed those patients and their caregivers. Some of our clients have family caregivers who aren't much more able-bodied than the clients themselves. The bottom line is that caregiving is tough work, and often under-appreciated. Kitchen Angels realizes this and tries to lift the burden of those who are giving care to our homebound clients by making sure caregivers have enough to eat.
We also want to recognize that, in addition to helping care for Kitchen Angels' clients, many of our volunteers are caring for family members. We hope that, as caregivers, you are able to practice self-care. Here are 10 good tips for caregivers that might make things easier for you. We appreciate all that you do!

Jill, Suellen, Janey & Linda working behind the scenes at Kitchenality
|
|
We want to take a moment to thank those volunteers who work behind the scenes at
KITCHENALITY to keep it running smoothly. You may not know that there is a team of volunteers who process the donations before they hit the sales floor. These volunteers wash, scrub, research, price, and then incorporate the new items into existing displays. That's a lot of work and we couldn't do it without the help of these wonderful, helpful individuals. If you ever see them back in the warehouse, give these unsung heroes a word of thanks for their hard work.
Many thanks to the various committee members who are also working behind the scenes to

ensure our programs and entire organization run smoothly.
The Hiring Committee did a great job finding the newest member of our staff and Director of Food Services -
Joe Cates. The
Contingency Committee worked out plans to continue cooking meals during our building renovation. The
Building Committee continues to meet frequently on issues that come up during the renovation. The
new
PR Committee is working to come up with an awareness campaign for 2018 for Kitchen Angels. And finally, the
Marketing Committee is identifying new ways for us to reach out to our community to make our presence known. These committees are made up of board members, local professionals, and volunteers who contribute to the good work ahead.
If you'd like to contribute to any of these committees, please contact
Tony at 471-7780 X 205.
A Last Thank You Note from Teresa...
"Dear Kitchen Angels volunteers- each one of you. I would like to thank everyone who contributed to my 10,000 Waves gift certificate, and all of the other gifts. The party on Saturday, September 30th was so much fun. So many people showed up and ate pizza with me, asking questions about my future...which I still don't know. Keep up the good work at Kitchen Angels and remember the mission still stands."
