Weekly Meditations by the Rev. Daniel R. Heischman

The National Association of Episcopal Schools (NAES) announces the publication of  Weekly Meditations: 2014-2017, the second collection of  Weekly Meditations by the Rev. Daniel R. Heischman, D.D., executive director of NAES.
The  Weekly Meditation began in 2011, as a regular email to the Association's member heads, rectors, and chaplains. In 2016, the first collection of meditations was published, covering the first three years of this endeavor. With the publication of this most recent volume, all six years are now represented and available as a resource to the wider school and Episcopal Church communities.
These meditations are intended to inspire and encourage those who guide, lead, and tend to Episcopal schools and the students and families in their care. The weekly emails are eagerly awaited by many each Monday morning during the school year, and are often circulated far beyond the typical constituency of Episcopal schools.
These collected meditations will appeal to a wide Episcopal audience - heads of school and trustees; vestry members and parish clergy; bishops and diocesan staff; faculty members, chaplains, and administrators; parents; educators in general - all of whom will find these thoughtful musings about the rhythm and culture of our schools, their Episcopal identity, the demands of leadership, and the education and moral development of our students to be honest, accurate, and uplifting. Equally suitable for reading in a single sitting or over many, these messages in turn comfort, provoke, encourage, and nourish readers as they move through the world of Episcopal schools and beyond.
NAES members will receive a complimentary copy of  Weekly Meditations: 2014-2017. Additional copies can be purchased online through our store.  Weekly Meditations: 2014-2017 can also be purchased as a package with the previous collection,  Weekly Meditations: 2011-2014 for a reduced price. Visit the NAES website at  www.episcopalschools.org/shop-naes.

Episcopal Relief & Development Receives $1.4 Million Hilton Foundation Grant to Support Early Childhood Development in Zambia and Kenya

Episcopal Relief & Development is proud to announce that it has received a $1.4 million grant from the Conrad  N. Hilton Foundation to expand its integrated Early  Childhood Development program (ECD) in Zambia and to extend the program into Kenya. The four-year grant will  enable the organization and its local partners, Zambia Anglican Council Outreach Programmes (ZACOP) and Anglican Church of Kenya Development Services (ADS-Nyanza), to impact 7,600 families including 14,880 children under the age of three, many of whom are impacted by HIV/AIDS.

"We are extremely grateful for the continued partnership of the Conrad N. Hilton Foundation and its commitment towards early childhood development and vulnerable children," said Robert W. Radtke, President of Episcopal Relief & Development. "This generous grant recognizes the significance of our work and represents a strategic priority for Episcopal Relief & Development as we strengthen and expand the program in Zambia and Kenya."

Episcopal Relief & Development is the recipient of one of 17 grants made by the Hilton Foundation's Young Children Affected by HIV and AIDS Initiative in 2017, which is aimed at addressing the needs of families affected by the disease, particularly children ages three and under.

This is the third grant that Episcopal Relief & Development has received from the Hilton Foundation. In 2011, a $350,000 grant helped launch the ECD program which reached an estimated 4,000 families. In 2013, the organization was awarded a $1 million grant to help expand the program to serve 12,500 children. Episcopal Relief & Development and ZACOP celebrated the program's accomplishments at a forum held in Lusaka, Zambia in May 2017.

The impact of the program has been transformational, changing how parents, particularly fathers, connect with their children on a deeper, more responsive level. It has trained 742 volunteers and engaged over 6,000 primary caregivers and almost 10,000 children under the age of five. Parent-child activities which promote children's cognitive development skills more than doubled from 38% to 79%, motor skills increased from 43% to 79%, and social skills improved from 75% to 92%.

"Young children impacted by HIV/AIDS can now receive care that supports their health and development," said Felicia Sakala, ZACOP's Country Director in Zambia. "Our children and their families are much better served when we work within the family unit and share essential parenting practices which family members can easily adopt."

The new grant will support 60 new ECD programs in rural areas of Zambia and engage an estimated 14,400 children under three along with 7,200 primary caregivers. In Kenya, the Hilton Foundation grant will contribute to the new Kisumu County program which includes 400 parents or relatives and approximately 480 children under three. The program will train volunteers, directly engage fathers and expand the focus on nutrition. An integral part of the ECD program includes research to develop information for best practices so that effective strategies may be utilized by a wide range of faith-based organizations and community development programs.

"Faith-based organizations perform a critical function in identifying and mobilizing community support for vulnerable children and their families," noted Samuel Omondi, Executive Director of ADS-Nyanza in Kenya. "ADS-Nyanza will be creating a consortium of faith-based organizations to reach out to the entire community to participate in activities that stimulate and nurture our children."

Episcopal Relief & Development's Early Childhood Development programs fight poverty, hunger and disease and promote the health, development and financial well being of families, and are designed to ensure that communities flourish. As part of the program, parents and primary caregivers share their experiences and ideas with each other, while children acquire knowledge to share with their own children when they, too, become parents.

To learn more about Episcopal Relief & Development's Early Childhood Development program, please visit the organization's Early Childhood Development website page.

For over 75 years, Episcopal Relief & Development has served as a compassionate response to human suffering in the world. The agency works with more than 3 million people in nearly 40 countries worldwide to overcome poverty, hunger and disease through multi-sector programs, using the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as a framework. An independent 501(c)(3) organization, it works closely with Anglican Communion and ecumenical partners to help communities create long-term development strategies and rebuild after disasters.

The Conrad N. Hilton Foundation was created in 1944 by international business pioneer Conrad N. Hilton, who founded Hilton Hotels and left his fortune to help the world's disadvantaged and vulnerable people. The Foundation currently conducts strategic initiatives in six priority areas: providing safe water, ending chronic homelessness, preventing substance use, helping young children affected by HIV and AIDS, supporting transition-age youth in foster care, and extending Conrad Hilton's support for the work of Catholic Sisters. A Message from Bishop Gutiérrez Regarding the 2018 Diocesan Budget

Servant Year is On!

"Are you called to serve?"

Servant Year 2017 began August 19 with seven new Fellowes on board for a year of service and discernment in our diocese.  A program of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania and a member of the Episcopal Service corps, Servant Year offers full time paid volunteer positions for young adults interested in discerning a deeper sense of purpose in their life. Our Fellowes come to us from all over the country and this year, even the UK. They are:

  • Georgianna Hicks, from Harrisburg graduated from the Philadelphia Art Institute. Service Site: St. James School
  • Roses Laughlin, grew up in Lansdale, is a new graduate of the University of Pittsburg. Service Site: Church of the Advocate
  • Gregory Louis was born in Haiti, grew up in Florida and graduated from the University of Pennsylvania. Service Site: St. James School
  • Johnny Malin, Philadelphia graduated from the Unviersity of Notre Dame. Service Site: Church of the Advocate
  • Elexus Mays served with Lasallian Volunteers in Racine, Wisconsin and is a graduate of Howard University. Service Site: St. James School
  • Max Wooley is from New Jersey and graduated from Durham University in the United Kingdom. Service Site: St. Mark's Episcopal Church
  • Gabriella Machado served in Newark, New Jersey last year and is a graduate of the University of Strathclyde in the United Kingdom which is also from where she hails. Service Site: St. Mark's Episcopal Church

Among them they possess a wealth of experiences, talents and gifts: from an artist, to elite athletes in basketball and boxing, to a pilgrim who walked the Camino de Santiago in Spain, a social justice advocate, a choral music enthusiast, historian and theologian, and a gifted educator-these young adults come to us with a passion for discerning where God is leading them in their life and a heart for service.

Members in this urban missionary like program receive full-time volunteer positions at a partner site, monthly stipends, housing, health insurance, meals and public transportation tokens.  Servant Year is a supportive community that includes regular spiritual direction and formation.  It is perfect for new graduates who want to "give back" before they start their career; want a break in between college and graduate school; or need a little extra time to discern where their life is calling them after plans change or do not materialize as expected.

If you know of a college graduate who sounds like a good fit for this ministry please have them contact  [email protected] .  This program is not limited to Episcopalians.  But for those young adults who grew up in the Episcopal Church, Servant Year can be the next step in maturing their faith and discerning their call to ministry, whether that is ordained or lay.

Where are YOU being called to serve?

Video Invitation to Join the Bishop's Bible Challenge!

Dear Brothers and Sisters,

As another part of my promise to better serve you, I am pleased to present another major initiative from the Offices of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania. This Bible App will help us all to feel connected, provides a platform for participating in the Bishop's Bible Challenge, and perhaps most importantly is a powerful tool for you to read or hear the Word of God in 1,000 languages. With the Bible App, many now have access to the word of God in their primary language. Reading the Bible together as a diocesan community will have a life changing effect. The importance of Christian people using Holy Scripture as a foundation for daily life is hard to overstate. Who we are as the People of God flows directly from our worship, doctrine, and liturgy, which are all rooted in Scripture. To know the Bible better, is to know ourselves as the People of God better, to know our mission to the world better, and to know our faith better. We are here to help and to serve you, and this mobile app is another important step in showing the kind of innovation and emphasis that is placed on equipping our congregations to build the Kingdom of God.

The Rt. Rev. Daniel G.P. Gutiérrez
XVI Bishop of the Episcopal Diocese of Pennsylvania

The Bishop's Bible Challenge leads us through the entire bible in a year's time. Not only will you find the daily reading and meditation rewarding, but you will be joining in community with hundreds, possibly thousands, of fellow Episcopalians in our diocese. While this may seem like a daunting undertaking, as the Bible tells us "Fear Not", for there are many ways to connect!
You can download The DIOPA Bible in a Year App from iTunes, Apple App Store, and Google Play. To download the mobile application, go to the "App Store" icon on your iPhones or the "Google Play" icon on your Android Phone and search for "DIOPA" or "DIOPA bible." It is a self-contained way to participate and has everything you need including a link to the registration page, the Bible readings for each day, an online link to the Bible in audible and readable forms and daily reading or listening selections that will help everyone to read the same selections each day.

* If you don't want to use the app, register to participate at our online registration site:  https://diopa.wufoo.com/forms/bishops-bible-challenge/

* If you do not use a computer or smart phone simply call the Offices of the Diocese at 215-627-6434 to register and receive a Bible Study Packet; or contact your Priest for these materials.

* Join our online Facebook group at < DIOPA Bishop's Bible Challenge>. This is where you can post your own testimonies on the readings. These responses can be written or use your phone or camera to take a picture that reflects your response to the reading. Include a brief description and post with the hash tag #wordon and #diopabbc. Check the group page or the hash tags to see what other participants are saying!

* Information and resources regarding The Bishop's Bible Challenge can be found online:  http://www.diopa.org/bishops-bible-challenge/

The important thing to know is that you are not alone in this and you cannot mess this up! If you miss a day of reading, or a week for that matter, just jump back in to the schedule because there is no wrong way to do this. If you'd rather not read, the Bible App will play the day's selections in a dramatized audio format for you to listen.

So let's come together as a diocesan family and build the Kingdom of God -praying together, worshipping together, studying together - in this the "come and see" diocese. #diopalove #diopacomeandsee #wordon #diopabbc - there are multiple ways to connect!
