United We Fight for ALICE

We're entering what we all know as "The Giving Season." It's a time to give thanks and a time to give back. If you've already made a gift to United Way of Whatcom County this year, you've helped ALICE. If you haven't yet made your gift, there's still time!

ALICE stands for Asset Limited Income Constrained Employed and refers to those who live above the poverty line and are employed, but struggle to make ends meet. ALICE has to choose between food or electricity, diapers or medicine, and rent or childcare. More than 2 in 5 households in Whatcom County fall into the ALICE population or below the poverty line. ALICE is the person you sat next to on the bus, that friendly barista who poured your coffee this morning, your neighbor, your friend. ALICE is all around you, and she needs your help. For ALICE, we must fight. As a friend of United Way, we ask that you join us in the fight.  Join the 100+ area businesses who host a workplace campaign , or privately  Donate to our Community Impact Fund and help us support...

... affordable childcare so ALICE can ensure her kids get the experiences they need early in life, which will increase their likelihood of graduating from high school so that they can earn higher wages and give back to our community...

... job training programs so that ALICE can find employment, get promoted, increase her income, and go from barely surviving to thriving...

... health resources so that ALICE can exercise, eat well, and access healthcare when she needs it.

During this giving season and always, join us in the fight.  Find Out More About ALICE in Our Community  .

2017 Campaign Kick-Off Luncheon

You came. You saw. You kicked things off! Once again, we filled every seat at our 2017 Campaign Kick-Off. The Live United spirit was contagious that day. A big thanks to all 200+ of you who attended.  An extra special thank you to Emily of Lydia place who shared with us how powerful living United has been for the mothers and children who access services through Lydia Place's Transitional Housing and Parent Support Programs with the help of Unite d Way. Together, we're advancing the common good. United we fight. United we win.

New Development and Communications Manager Joins the UWWC Team

We proudly welcome Tera Contezac to the United Way team!  Originally a Midwesterner, Tera moved to Whatcom County in 2008. She finds it to be the most beautiful place in this country and is proud to call Bellingham her home. With prior experience in education and, more recently, eight years of direct service and non-profit management, she is excited to continue to bring our community together through her work here as our new development and communications manager. She envisions our community as a place where everyone can life a life full of opportunities and, with your help, knows that will happen if we live United! Tera is giving to United Way this giving season because she wants to invest in a bright future for her daughter.

Save the Date for #GivingTuesday

You've heard of Black Friday. You've probably even heard of Cyber Monday, but have you heard of #GivingTuesday? We're proud to join this  global day of giving that harnesses the collective power of individuals, communities, and organizations to encourage philanthropy and to celebrate generosity worldwide. Occurring this year on November 28th,  #GivingTuesday is held annually on the Tuesday after Thanksgiving (in the US) and the widely recognized shopping events Black Friday and Cyber Monday. This day is a kick-off to the holiday giving season and inspires people to collaborate in improving their local communities and to give back in impactful ways to the charities and causes they support. Now, the only question is, how will you give?

What's Your #MyGivingStory?

You give because someone once gave to you. You give because every child deserves a healthy start. You give because you can't afford not to. Behind every gift is a giving story. We want to hear yours! Our friends at  #GivingTuesday are running their second annual #MyGivingStory contest. Enter today for a chance to win up to $10,000 for a nonprofit of your choice.

We'd also love for you to share your giving stories with us directly. Message us on Facebook or send us an email. You live United. It's time to tell the world why!

United Way Campaign Execs Light Up Workplaces Across the County

Every fall, we have the pleasure of visiting many of you at your workplaces. Already this year, we've been to Samson Rope, BP, PeaceHealth, and WECU, to name a few. Our team enjoys getting out into the community, along with representatives from our 30+ partner programs, to share information on what it means to live United. We share stories of the tens of thousands of lives directly impacted by United Way of Whatcom County each year. More than that, our workplace campaigns bring folks together. From chili cook-offs at WTA to ping-pong tournaments at Samson Rope or a little bit of friendly corn hole competition at Ferndale School District, giving has never felt so good! If you haven't seen us around your workplace, but would like to,   contact us to start a United Way campaign in your workplace today! And, a big THANK YOU to all of you who have already participated in your workplace campaigns this year! We couldn't do it without you.

Living United at the BP Agency Fair

Our friends at BP hosted yet another successful United Way fair, where over a dozen of our partner agencies exhibited the work of their United Way programs, giving BP employees and contractors a chance to truly understand the impact of United Way in our community. We've been so humbled by BP's generous support over the years, and this giving season is no exception. Thank you, BP!
