Adult Events

We the Poets: Poetry Workshop for Adults. Thursdays, 9/28, 10/5, 10/12, 12/19, 10/26, 11/2, 11/9, 11/16, 11/30, 12/7, 12/14, 12/21, 12/28, 11:00 am - 12:30 pm. Beginner and experienced poets "will hold these truths to be self-evident" that all poems can be created using trial and error, serendipity along with learning the processes of craft in this poetry workshop. Discover your muse as Thea Schiller will introduce an established poem, lead a discussion an create in class writing exercises with time allotted to write and share each week. Participating members will be encouraged to expand their repertoire of poems.
 
Winter Watercolors . Mondays, Oct. 30, Nov 6, 20, 27, Dec. 4, 18 at 10:30am at Somers Library. Explore making winter scenes with water colors & salt -to create dramatic effects! The winter brings us crystal images and we will make them as well.  Bring your watercolors and your imagination, and learn to make great effects in your art work. $30 instructor fee paid at the first class.

TED Talks at the Somers Library. Every 1st Thursday of the month: September 7, October 5, November 2, & December 7, 1:00 - 2:30 pm. Join host Eugene Ritchie in discussion after viewing two TED talk speakers each session who will speak on a specific topic. Each talk will be followed by light refreshment. Registration is required.November 2nd. Topic: Happiness & Good Life: Jim Yong Kim, "Doesn't Everyone Deserve a Chance at a Good Life?"; Robert Waldinger, "What Makes a Good Life?" 

GIMME a HINT!  Thursday, November 9, 4 - 5 pm. Gimme a Hint! is the ultimate interactive game show. Every audience member becomes a contestant at all times, and everyone is free to shout out an answer at any time. The consummate Master of Ceremonies, Gene Jones manages to turn the apparent ensuing chaos into a fast-paced theatrical production that enthralls audiences of all ages.

Financial Strategies for Women . Friday, November 10, 1 - 2:30 pm. You probably have a pretty good idea of where your paycheck goes - your housing and transportation, your groceries, household expenses, healthcare and maybe some savings. What you may be less clear on is the "big picture" of your finances, and how your choices are helping - or hurting - your personal and financial goals. That's why it's so important to have a sound financial strategy. This program will show you the steps to take in making a sound financial strategy and provide peace of mind.

Ten Pillars of Creativity.  Friday, November 17, 3:00 - 4:00 pm. Acclaimed trivia game show host Gene Jones uses the form of a game show to teach participants how to use "transformational play" to unlock the mind by using a strategic game show format using questions that improve cognition, increase fluid intelligence and provide a mental cross-training effect. Designed to build teamwork, ideation,  problem solving and sales, it is a valuable tool for businesses as well as schools, colleges and universities. 

Ongoing Events 
 
Coloring Book Club for Adults. Relax, color, socialize - all for free at Somers Library! Materials are provided, or bring your own colored pencils and coloring books (recommended.) Registration is not required; meetings will be held in the conference room every Friday from 10:30-12:30. 
   
Westchester Writers. 6:30pm on the first, third and fifth Thursday of each month in the program room. Join a safe, supportive, and creative environment to share literary works in progress. This is not a writing class, but rather an ongoing group of writers offering assistance to its members who are looking to improve their writing skills through positive feedback and helpful critiques. Beginners as well as experienced writers over the age of 18 are welcome.   
The Somers Library would like to thank the Somers Library 2017 Battle of the Books team! These dedicated team members read and studied 5 books over the summer and then practiced as a team many times since school began.  They did a great job at the competition and they made us proud. We appreciate all their hard work!

Teen College Prep: 18 ACT Questions You Can Answer: Thurs., Nov. 9th at 6:15 pm. Math professor and ACT/SAT tutor, Mike Goodman presents a review of the ACT exam by presenting students with a handout describing 18 types of questions found on the ACT Exam. Mr. Goodman will explain to the students what to look for to recognize these questions and will present a solid strategy that students can use to solve them. Please register here.

Introduction to Babysitting:Essential Knowledge for the Smart Sitter - Sat., Nov. 4, from 10:30 am to 2:30 pm. For 5th Graders and up! Topics include: Infant Care, Playing, Responsibilities & Emergencies. Please bring lunch, a drink, a notebook, and a pencil. Certificates of completion will be given at the end of class. Please register here.

Teen Creative Writers Workshop - Thursdays from 3:15 pm to 4:45 pm on the following dates: 10/26, 11/9, 11/30, 12/14, 1/4, 1/18, 2/1, 2/15 & 3/1. Work on developing your creative writing in a fun & encouraging environment! This program is geared towards students in 7th grade and up.  Register here.

Anime Club - This club meets every Wednesday starting 9/13 from 3:00-4:30 pm. 

Teen/Tween Pokemon Club - Join us at the Somers Library to meet, discuss and battle your friends using your Nintendo 3DS!  This program is for teens/tweens in grades 5th and up. Meeting dates are Fridays on the following dates:  9/15, 9/29, 10/27, 11/3, 11/17, 12/1, & 12/15 from 3:15-4:30. Please register here. 
 
Anime Nights! - Meets one Friday a month from 5:00 - 7:00pm on the following dates 9/15, 10/13, 11/3, & 12/1*.  (*Meet time for 12/1 meeting is 4:30-6:30 pm).

Flowers: The flowers that you see at the library are sponsored by the Friends of Somers Library and donated by local businesses. We thank Il Forno for donating this month's flower arrangement.

Somers Library Foundation
The Somers Library is accepting book donations for a used book sale in Spring 2018, where you can find great books at bargain prices.  Items accepted include soft and hardcover books in good condition, as well as audio books on CD, music CDs, and DVDs.  Not accepted: VHS and cassette tapes, computer software, magazines / newspapers, or torn, water-damaged or mildewed materials.
 
The Library Foundation will run the used book sale, with all proceeds going to support the Library. We need volunteers to help out with a variety of things from now through next April. Even if you have just a few hours to spare, please consider giving back to the community by lending us a hand. To express your interest in helping with this event, call (914) 361-9979, or contact us through our website .
