TEAM ALBION
NEWSLETTER

October 6, 2017

On Saturday, September 30, 2017, approximately 40
volunteers participated in the Klean the Kazoo event, collecting
trash in the Kalamazoo River and along the river banks by boat, waders, and land. To begin the day, volunteers were provided a breakfast prepared by Council Member Lenn Reid and pancakes
cooked by ADPS Chief Scott Kipp in the mobile kitchen. The
event was sponsored by the City of Albion, Whitehouse Nature
Center, Albion College Canoe and Kayak Club, and the Enbridge Foundation.

City Manager Sheryl Mitchell commented, "It was very inspiring to see so many people and organizations coming together for the beautification of one of Albion's greatest assets, the Kalamazoo River." Assistant City Manager Stacey Levin noted, "It was a successful team effort for a great cause. I enjoyed working with David Green (Director of the Whitehouse Nature Center), Jim Lenardson (Director of Public Services), ADPS Chief Scott Kipp, and Council Member Lenn Reid in planning the event where we discussed locations, logistics, and equipment needs."

Many Albion College student and faculty volunteers were recruited to participate in the event and Albion City Hall AmeriCorps VISTAs Andrew Texel and Lauren Freeman were instrumental in gathering volunteers from the community. Volunteers were supplied waders, canoes, and grabber tools to collect the trash in bags. Gator vehicles were used to pick up the bagged trash and bring it to a dumpster donated by Granger.

Several local businesses made generous donations that helped make the event a success. Granger donated a roll off dumpster allowing for a central location to place the trash, Biggby Coffee donated coffee, McDonald's donated yogurt parfaits, and Family Fare donated a gift card that provided juice and water for the volunteers. Additional funding for the event was made possible through the Enbridge Foundation.

A tremendous thank you to all of the volunteers, partners, and sponsors for their commitment to this important community clean-up effort.

LEAF PICK UP NO LONGER DONE BY CITY OF ALBION

Yard waste is collected weekly by Granger (every Wednesday through November). Please use your own compostable, paper yard waste bags or your own reusable container clearly marked "yard waste only."

Paper yard waste bags can be purchased at local retailers. If you opt to use a reusable container make sure it is no heavier than 30 pounds. If the container does not have a cover, please make holes at the bottom to allow rain water to drain.

Businesses, community organizations, and residents are asked to please clean up leaves, grass clippings, and other debris on and around the catch basins in the street in front of your property. This helps to reduce street flooding in the fall and snow removal in the winter months.

Leaves, grass clippings, and other yard waste should be placed at the curb by 7 a.m. on Wednesdays. Twigs, small branches, sticks, and brush that are less than four feet in length and 2 inches in diameter should be bundled and tied with heavy twine and should not exceed 12 inches in diameter or be heavier than 30 pounds. Each bundle counts as one bag.

You may set out up to six bags and/or bundles per week.

City residents who have obtained a $10 pass for the Tree Dump (available at City Hall) can also dispose of yard waste at the tree dump off of Brownswood Road by the Albion Water Treatment Plant.

For the month of November the Tree Dump will be open to all residents Monday through Friday 7 a.m.-3 p.m., no pass required. This is for yard waste only, no trash is permitted.

On Saturday, Nov. 18 the Tree Dump is open to all residents from 8:00 a.m.- 4:00 p.m.
NO PASS REQUIRED

To avoid receiving a ticket or fine, residents are reminded NOT to rake, sweep, or place yard clippings, leaves, branches, or debris in the street or gutter pan. (As per City Ordinance, reference: Sec. 66-141, Sec. 66-241, and Sec. 66-243) it is a civil infraction subject to fines.
