Post-Thanksgiving Memorial Hike with Outdoor Afro
Meetup Group: "Lake Okeechobee is the site of one of the most fatal hurricanes to hit the United States. This is a little known piece of history due to the fact that most people who died were black immigrant farmers who were, for the most part, not counted in the official death toll until 2003. The day after Thanksgiving, we are going to pay homage to those that were never fully honored. We'll start off at the Port Mayaca Cemetery learning about the history of the area and of the Hurricane and then take a quick 2.5-mile hike along Lake Okeechobee itself. So on Black Friday, please #OptOutside and join us in enjoying the beauty of nature and reclaiming our black history to keep it alive."
WHEN: Friday, November 24, 2017
1:00 p.m. - 5:00 p.m.
WHERE: Port Mayaca Cemetery,
23900 SW Kanner Hwy, Canal Point, FL 33438
