Hillview Parent Teacher Conferences
Hillview will hold conferences during the afternoons of October 24 - 27, 2017. Conference days are minimum days and students are dismissed at 11:45 a.m. Hillview employs a third-party online conference scheduler to help teachers and parents schedule meetings. The time frame for parents to sign on and schedule a conference is from October 14, 2017 at 12:00 a.m. through October 20, 2017 at 11:59 p.m. If parents want to schedule a meeting after this window, they must contact the teacher directly. Please note that it is not possible for our teachers to conference with all families. Hillview's practice is to set up high-priority conferences first, and then open up the conference scheduler for the remaining slots on a first come, first served basis.
All Hillview families will receive an email with instructions for scheduling a conference on Monday, October 9, 2017.
Reporting an Absence
If your student is going to be absent from school, report the absence and the reason for the absence to Mrs. Cathy Bell, our Attendance Clerk. She is available by phone at 650-326-4341 or by email
here. If an absence is not reported, Mrs. Bell will contact parents/guardians to get the reason for the absence for attendance reporting purposes. See the Hillview Handbook

Tardy Policy
Set yourself up for success! Being on time for school and for each class at Hillview is important! A student earns a tardy for being late to school or class without a valid reason.
Our tardy policy is as follows:
- Tardy 1 and 2 are "Free."
- Tardy 3, 4, and 5 each earn an office detention.
- Tardy 6 and up each earn a Saturday School.

Hillview Site Council
We meet this Tuesday, October 10, 3:30 - 5:00 p.m. in the large conference room in the Hillview Office. We will receive updates on the 2017-18 Site Plan and our student wellness goals. Everyone is
welcome to attend these meetings.
We are a collaborative group of parents, teachers, and staff who meet monthly to discuss and establish school-wide goals and actions. Our mission is to inspire and empower all students to be resilient problem solvers, compassionate contributors, and lifelong learners during their journey of academic and personal growth.

This senseless act of violence could cause fear among our students, and we want to equip you with resources to thoughtfully respond and process the information with your child.
We recommend keeping the message simple. Focusing on the things that are in place to keep our children safe, such as, first responders and school personnel. Many of the resources listed

advise similar actions on the part of parents, such as taking breaks from the news, making ourselves available for conversations, and remaining calm and reassuring. More resources

While the District does not intend to make a practice of reviewing student social media accounts, from time to time we may be required to investigate publicly available online content in response to reports of cyberbullying, threats or other misconduct, or in connection with a student suicide risk assessment in an effort to ensure a safe learning environment. Student safety is the District's top priority and we welcome the opportunity to further discuss the components
of our school safety programs that may involve a review of publicly available student social media at the October 10, 2017, Board meeting. The Board meeting begins at
6:00 p.m.
and will be held at the District Office, 181 Encinal Avenue, Atherton.
MPCSD Parent Education Speaker Series
Anxiety and Depression in Teenagers
Wednesday, November 8, 6:30 p.m.
, Hillview PAC. Come listen to Jacob Towery, MD talk about anxiety and depression in teenagers. The evening will include time for questions and answers.

Jacob Towery, MD, Adolescent and Adult Psychiatrist; Adjunct Clinical Faculty, Stanford University Department of Psychiatry; author of "The Anti-Depressant Book: A Practical Guide for Teens and Young Adults to Overcome Depression and Stay Healthy."
Dr. Towery will be available to sign books after the event. Books will be available for purchase.

Intermediate/Advanced Mandarin

and we have space for two more students. This class is for students who have had at least three years of Chinese classes and who want to gain confidence in their speaking and writing in a fun, engaging classroom.

We Scare Hunger Canned Food Drive
Hillview's Associated Student Body is hosting our annual food drive October 10 - November 3. Bring cans of food to school and drop them off in the PAC lobby
from 7:55 to 8:20 a.m. We have bins labeled for each academy; these bins will be picked up by the Second Harvest Food Bank. We can take any type of canned food, but no bulk rice, flour, or sugar, and no glass. The preferred items are

Library
eBooks and Audiobooks now available to all Hillview students! Your student ID gives you access to over 80 audiobooks and over 800 eBooks through the OverDrive app. It works on your school iPad or virtually any device, tablet, computer or phone. Use your student ID and ask the library if you need any help!
Books Come Alive this Halloween at your library! Come dressed up as a character from a book. Come to the library before school or at brunch to get a prize and a block H point. We will also take your photo and display it in the library!
NaNoWriMo is right around the corner! All creative writers interested in meeting up with other writers are invited to bring your lunch to the library this Tuesday for an organizing meeting of the Writing Club.
Lunch Clubs
Hillview's Knitting and Crochet Club Mondays and Thursdays during lunch in Room A8. We would like donations of yarn, knitting needles (wood preferred) and crochet hooks. Some of the students will be learning how to knit and crochet, while others will have the opportunity to work on projects and improve their skills. All students are welcome!

Congratulations
The Concert Band 2, Orchestra 2, and Choir have been selected to perform at Disneyland! We are still locking in dates, but the tour will be in Spring 2018. Congrats to all musicians!
Service Team
Halloween Costume Drive

The Hillview Service Team is leading a Halloween costume drive for the San Mateo County Children's Fund. Please provide new or gently worn costumes that are in good condition. Service Team students will be at carpool lane to collect costumes. Costumes can also be dropped in the costume bin inside the office. This program distributes costumes to hundreds of youth in our county who otherwise could not afford to buy one!
All contributions are greatly appreciated!

Basketball Registration
Registration
available online here, October 16 - 25. There will be mandatory team-placement workouts on Saturday, November 4 for 6th and 7th graders; Sunday, November 5 for 8th graders. Basketball is by far our most popular sport; Hillview normally fields 25 or more teams. If your student intends to play, we strongly recommend registering early. The deadline for registration is October 25, but teams usually fill up before the deadline.
We can only field as many teams as we have coaches. If we have 25 teams, we'll need at least 50 coaches. We will have some non-parent coaches, but most of the coaching staff is made up of parent volunteers. Consider coaching when you register your student to play; experience is not necessary.
Scholarships are available for all Hillview-supported sports.
Refunds are not available for after-school sports after the registration deadline.

M-A 8th-Grade Information Night October 18, 6:15 - 8:45 p.m. This event will highlight the strengths of M-A as an academic and social community, share information about our athletic and enrichment opportunities, and personalize M-A through presentations by our students and faculty. The night begins with the principal's welcome and a special student performance
at 6:15 p.m. Then at 6:45 p.m., groups will tour various sites on campus to learn about the excellent academic programs from our teaching staff and hear from students about their M-A experience. Tours will be led by students and PTA volunteers.

Youth League Tennis Registration Open Saturdays, October 7 through December 2, Rinconada Park. Youth League Tennis was created by a former Wimbledon player to give all kids ages 5-14 the opportunity to learn, play, and compete in their own neighborhood. YLT groups kids into five levels of play ranging from beginners through advanced players. Our goal is to help players get ready to play High School Tennis.
