The Reformation of Everything

Reformation Commemoration Symposium: On Tuesday, October 31, Luther College will host a symposium honoring the 500th anniversary of the Reformation.  Entitled "The Reformation of Everything, 1517-2017," the event will begin at 9:00 a.m. in the Center for Faith and Life with a plenary address by Professor Brad Gregory of Notre Dame. The remainder of the day will consist of presentations and performances by members of the Luther College community. Click here for further information and a full program.   
 
Reformation Commemoration Concert: Tuesday, October 31 at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Faith and Life. The Luther College Music Department will present the Reformation Cantata, a work composed in honor of the Reformation Commemoration by four Luther College alumni and four current students. The program will also include a new work for concert band, jointly commissioned by a consortium of Lutheran colleges. Ensembles involved include the Concert Band, Collegiate Chorale, and Cathedral Choir.  More information 
St. Martin's Day Dinner -- Saturday, November 11, 5:30-7:00 p.m. in Peace Dining Room, Luther will host a festive conclusion to the 2017 Reformation Commemoration. Inspired by the historical menu associated with this medieval harvest festival, the dinner will be served family style, include a short program of period music, and offer a cash bar.  Cost for students is five dollars plus a swipe of the meal card; ten dollars for all others. Tickets and more information available online or at the Ticket Office.

RENT (the musical) will be performed in Jewel Theatre on November 10, 11, 16, 17 @ 7:30 p.m. and November 18 & 19 @ 1:30 p.m. Tickets are $15 or FREE with Luther ID. Tickets are available at tickets.luther.edu or at the Ticket Office.
 
College Ministries invites you to join us for All Saints Chapel, Wednesday, November 1, 10:30-10:50 a.m. in the Center for Faith and Life. The service includes time to light candles and remember new saints and those who have died. Join the Luther community as we gather for a time of remembering, consolation, prayer and giving thanks.  

The Diversity Center will have a Decorah Walmart shopping shuttle running from 3:00-5:00 p.m. on Saturday, November 4.  This is open to all students and there is no charge, but reservations are requested, please register here . Students should meet in front of the Union.  
 
SAC Entertainment presents, Erik Berry, this Friday, November 3 at 7:30 p.m. in Marty's! Erik Berry  performs original, instrumental mandolin music inspired by Irish, bluegrass and old-time music as well as experimental, electronic music. He also performs with the Minnesota band, "Trampled by Turtles." He is a husband and father and is also a 1996 graduate of Luther College. Tickets are free with CAF and $9.
 
"Envisioned Worlds: Lithographs from the Hokes Archives," a collection of works depicting imaginary cultures with fabricated artifacts and hand printed bookplates, will be on display in the Kristen Wigley-Fleming Fine Arts Gallery in the Center for the Arts October 20-December 8. Beauvais Lyons, director of the Hokes Archives, created all of the works in the exhibit. Lyons will give a presentation about his work at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, November 9.

Alpha Phi Omega Service Fraternity is collecting donations for "The Road Home" shelter in Madison, WI. Asking for donations of: diapers (4-6), baby wipes, cleaning supplies, laundry detergent, bleach, paper towels, toilet paper, dish detergent, feminine hygiene products, hair care products designed for African American hair, deodorant, lotion, shampoo, gift cards. Donations can be placed in the plastic bins in Sampson-Hoffland study lounge, Jenson-Noble main office, Registrar's office, and 3rd floor of Olin by 5 p.m. on November 3. Questions?

RERUNS
The Center Stage Series presents Anat Cohen, performing music from her new album ' Happy Song ' with her 10 piece band at the Center for Faith and Life at 7:30 p.m. on November 4.  Her albums have seen the clarinetist/saxophonist range from hard-swinging to lilting balladry, from small groups to larger ensembles and back again, exploring a universe of music along the way.   For ticket information go to tickets.luther.edu, visit the Luther College Ticket Office or call (563) 387-1357.

It's been widely reported that ordinary Americans' living standards peaked in the mid-1970s and have since remained stagnant. While there is data to support this claim, some say the data is flawed. Challenging the existing data, Economist and Professor Don Boudreaux will share his findings at  7 p.m.  Thursday, November 2, in Valders Hall of Science, Room 206. His lecture, "The Myth of Middle Class Stagnation," describes how American living standards have improved significantly over the last 40 years.

Women and Gender Studies celebrates 25 years! The first designated women's studies course was taught at Luther in the Fall of 1992, Introduction to Women's Studies. We have transformed into a minor and now major and minor in Women and Gender Studies. Come celebrate our 25th birthday with a night of fun; a reception, dinner and program. Join us Friday, November 10 at 5:00 p.m. in Peace Dining Room. Tickets available online and at the Ticket Office.
 
Deepening the interfaith dialogue on Luther's campus, Regina Mustafa, an interfaith activist from Minnesota, will speak at 7 p.m. Wednesday, November 1, in the Center for Faith and Life, Recital Hall.

VOLUNTEER/NON-PROFIT CAREER FAIR - Thursday, November 2 in the Dahl Centennial Union from 10:00 a.m. - 3:00 p.m.  Stop by and visit with the representatives about their full-time/part-time/internships and volunteer opportunities!

Luther College Dance Marathon will host a benefit concert at 7 p.m., Friday, November 3, at the Lingonberry in downtown Decorah. The concert features Luther acapella groups, soloists, speakers, and information about Dance Marathon's mission. Entry fee of $5 with opportunities for free will donation throughout the night. Luther College Dance Marathon is a student-run organization that raises money to financially and emotionally supports the families of patients at the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital.

The Recycling and Compost Crew is looking for workers for J-term and spring semester 2018! Crew members  complete work related to campus recycling, composting, plastic film and other alternative waste streams. Help make Luther a more sustainable campus by joining our team! Children of all ages are invited to the Luther College Future Music Educators Association's production of "The Remarkable Farkle McBride," at 10:30 a.m. Saturday, November 4, in the Jenson-Noble Hall of Music Orchestra Room.

Zen Den Open House--located in Health Services has been expanded and refreshed  Stop by Monday November 6, 2:00-4:00 p.m. to see the new space and enjoy some refreshments. It is a space to relax and rejuvenate just in time for the holidays, CAL and busyness of finals. The Zen Den features a massage chair and meditation pillows and is available on a first-come, first-served basis Monday-Friday, 8:00am-12:00 p.m. and 1:00-4:00 p.m.

Book Signing - Tuesday, November 8 from 6:00-7:00 p.m. in Valders 206, Ryan Sallans will be giving a lecture: Scouting the Unknown. Ryan will be signing his book following the lecture titled, Second Son. Ryan's books are available for purchase in the Book Shop and will be available at the event.
 
A Luther College alumna who was a member of the first women's cross country team and her husband have provided a gift of $1 million to establish the Kent Finanger Endowed Chair for Women's Cross Country and Track and Field. This is the first endowed coaching position in the history of the college. It was the donor's wish to make this announcement on Coach Kent's 85th birthday, October 25.
