News from American Greyhound recapping August and looking forward to September

September Rescue Results
In September there were 35 adoptions and no new arrivals.

This makes our year-to-date totals 164 adoptions, 143 AG rescues, and 15 hauled for other groups.
Foster Family Online Training

Since greyhounds can't say "thank you", I will gladly speak on their behalf. The past couple of months have been a whirlwind for our veteran volunteers as well as all of the wonderful new foster families that have joined the American Greyhound fostering family this year. Now that the dogs in Mobile, Alabama have made their journey to adoption groups, it is time to move our focus to the other dogs that are waiting for American Greyhound to step in and help them find their forever families. We will be sending the hauler south the weekend of October 14-15 and we will have additional fostering opportunities later in the fall and winter as well. If you would like to be a part of this journey, send me an email at [email protected] or complete the fostering application on our website.

I will be hosting a livestream training event for new foster families as well as anyone who is interested and would like to learn more about what it means to foster for American Greyhound. It will also be recorded should you want the information but cannot "attend" the meeting.  I'll be hosting this event on Thursday October 12 at 6:30pm Central Standard Time. If you would like an invitation to attend, please email me. I hope to "meet" you on Thursday!

AG Exposure in Central Illinois

This past month was a very busy time for the little group of volunteers in Central Illinois - they had their regular monthly Rural King Meet & Greet, the picnic, the Champaign-Urbana Uniting Pride Parade, a table at the Prairieland Feeds Pet Fair Extravaganza and the University of Illinois Vet Med Open House. With the Annual Picnic, every weekend was booked for the last month.

Uniting Pride Parade

Sara Laufenberg and her family secured American Greyhound a spot in the annual CU Pride Parade on Saturday, September 16. They were also able to make several signs used during the parade to promote American Greyhound. Several local volunteers, adopted ambassadogs and foster dogs walked in the parade.

A select few of the hounds hammed it up and slowed down the parade for pets from the crowd.

Prairieland Feeds Pet Fair Extravaganza

During the weekend of September 23-24, 7 volunteers and 6 hounds faced 90+ degree weather and took shifts to man the table Prairieland Feeds so graciously offered. This two day event had thousands of attendees which was a great opportunity for us to promote American Greyhound and the loving nature of greyhounds.

University of Illinois Vet Med Open House

Tammy Foss, another dedicated volunteer in Central Illinois, secured American Greyhound a spot at the Vet Med Open House on Sunday, October 1. This year, volunteers came from South-Central Illinois and Indiana to help support American Greyhound through the exposure offered to us through this event. Organizers of the event touted the success of American Greyhound's involvement in an email, stating:
"We had the Open House recap with student leaders earlier this week. So many positive comments about your group! Hope you'll keep coming back! "
A Freezin' Good Reason for People with Warm Hearts to Support American Greyhound

The 2018 Polar Plunge is a unique opportunity for brave people to support American Greyhound in its mission to find homes for unwanted greyhounds all over the Midwest.   In keeping with our annual tradition, our plunge will occur in the morning on January 1, 2018 at North Avenue Beach, Chicago, IL.

Participants who raise at least $25 in donations from friends, family and co-workers get the privilege of receiving a commemorative Polar Bear Plunge long sleeve t-shirt and entrance into a Post-Plunge Warm Up Party, plus the chance to win additional prizes.

So if you're ready to make a big difference in the lives of some unwanted greyhounds,  click here to build a fundraising page and start your New Year off with a splash.

If you have any questions at all, please give me a call at (219) 263-8742 or send me an email at [email protected].
Happy Plunging!

P.S.   Don't forget about matching donation programs from your employers!  Many area companies offer this benefit but so few employees think to take advantage of it.  So check with your Human Resources Department and see if your company participates in this.  It's an easy way to get those pledges increased!  American Greyhound is more than willing to fill out any necessary paperwork to help get the donation.
Pup-date

On July 23, 2017, a litter of 7 puppies came to American Greyhound. The cute pups captured the hearts of many, and we wanted to give everyone a glimpse of greyhound life that rescue groups rarely see: puppyhood.

Evan writes:  Lyra has been perfect since day one. She is nearly housebroken! She can sit! She loves to play with every single toy and non-toy she can get her teeth on! She adores her brother, Sir Humphrey, and she can't be in a room without him or she whines until he comes back! She is growing so incredibly fast. when I adopted her, she was an inch or two below Humphrey's shoulder, and now she's a good 4 inches taller than him at the shoulder! I'm fairly certain her tail is never going to stop growing! She LOVES to give kisses, although she still struggles with keeping her mouth closed when she gives kisses. It has always been a dream of mine to adopt a puppy through American Greyhound, and most days, I still can't believe this crazy, sweet, loving little pup is mine. She is perfect through and through.
